Anyone planning cabinets with internal pull-outs or equipping a corner cabinet for wide access quickly reaches physical limits with standard hinges. A regular concealed hinge typically opens the door to 95° or 110°. The door edge protrudes into the clear opening of the carcass, obstructing drawers from sliding out. This is where the specialised kinematics of 165-degree concealed hinges / cabinet hinges come into play. Due to their complex multi-pivot mechanism, they swing the door completely clear of the carcass inner edge (zero protrusion).

Choosing the Right Overlay Type

Before using the Forstner bit, the position of the closed door relative to the carcass must be defined. The overlay type determines the cranking (bend of the hinge arm) of the wide-angle hinge:

  • Full overlay (also known as surface overlay): When closed, the cabinet door rests almost entirely on the carcass side. Only a narrow gap remains towards the outer edge. Full overlay concealed hinges are used for this (0 mm cranking).
  • Half overlay (twin door): Two doors share a single carcass centre panel. Each door covers half of the front edge. Half overlay concealed hinges are used for this (approx. 9.5 mm cranking).
  • Inset: The door does not sit on the carcass side, but sits flush within the cabinet sides. Inset concealed hinges are required (pronounced cranking, approx. 16 mm to 18 mm).

Step-by-Step Installation Guide

Installing wide-angle hinges requires absolute precision during marking out and drilling due to the leverage forces and swing geometry involved.

Step 1: Calculate and Mark Out the C-Dimension

The C-dimension (cup drilling distance) is the distance from the door edge to the perimeter of the 35 mm cup hole. For 165° hinges, depending on the manufacturer and desired door overlay, this measurement typically lies between 3 mm and 8 mm.

The required door overlay is calculated from the interaction between the C-dimension and the distance of the cruciform mounting plate (D-dimension). A common formula for full overlay is: Overlay = 11 mm + C-dimension - D-dimension (the constant of 11 mm varies slightly depending on the hinge manufacturer).

Mark the horizontal centre line for the hinge on the inside of the door. Mark the centre point for drilling along this axis. If your C-dimension is to be 4 mm, the centre point of the 35 mm hole will sit exactly 21.5 mm from the door edge (4 mm distance + 17.5 mm bit radius).

Step 2: Drill the Cup Hole

Place the Forstner bit precisely on the marked centre point. Drill completely perpendicular into the door (a pillar drill or mobile drill stand is ideal here). The drilling depth for a 165-degree hinge is generally 11.5 mm to 12.5 mm. For thinner fronts (e.g. 16 mm or 18 mm material thickness), pay strict attention to the depth stop to prevent drilling through the visible face.

Step 3: Secure the Hinge Cup

Insert the hinge into the drilled hole. Align the hinge arm precisely at a 90° angle to the door edge using the joiner's square. This is essential, as an improperly aligned hinge will later bind the kinematics. Pre-punch the fixing holes to the left and right of the cup using the bradawl and secure the hinge with two wood screws (3.5 mm x 16 mm).

Step 4: Position the Cruciform Mounting Plate on the Carcass

The position of the mounting plate follows System 32. For standard carcass drillings, the front row of holes is located exactly 37 mm from the front internal carcass edge. The spacing between the two fixing screws of the mounting plate is exactly 32 mm.

Transfer the vertical hinge positions from the door to the inside of the carcass (taking top and bottom gaps into account). Pre-drill lightly using the 2 mm wood drill bit and fasten the mounting plate using appropriate screws (Euro screws for 5 mm holes or chipboard screws).

Step 5: Hang the Door

Offer the door up to the carcass. Modern wide-angle hinges feature a clip-on mounting system. Place the hinge arm onto the mounting plate from the front and press at the rear until it audibly clicks into place. On older models or slide-on variants, the hinge arm is slid onto the plate and locked with a securing screw.

Perfect Hinge Adjustment (3D Adjustment)

A correctly mounted wide-angle hinge must be fine-tuned in the final step to achieve clean reveal gaps and stop the door catching on the carcass. The adjustment screws respond with great sensitivity – a quarter turn is often enough to produce a visible change.

1. Lateral adjustment (gap width and overlay) The front screw on the hinge arm controls lateral adjustment. Turning this screw moves the door left or right (usually within a range of ± 2 mm). This sets the side overlay on the carcass panel and ensures the vertical gap between two doors remains completely parallel.

2. Depth adjustment (distance from the carcass) The rear screw on the hinge arm (often concealed beneath a cover cap or designed as an eccentric cam) regulates the distance between the door and the front edge of the carcass. Loosen the screw slightly (or simply turn the cam) to move the door smoothly forwards or backwards (typical range + 3 mm / - 2 mm). The gap should be kept as small as possible without the door rubbing against the carcass side when opening.

3. Height adjustment The door height is adjusted directly at the cruciform mounting plate. Loosen the two plate mounting screws slightly, slide the door together with the hinges vertically to the desired position (± 2 mm), and re-tighten the screws firmly by hand. Some premium mounting plates also feature a convenient eccentric cam screw for this purpose.

Common Mistakes and Professional Tips

Even experienced installers occasionally make errors with the complex geometry of 165° hinges. Here are the most frequent pitfalls:

  • Neglecting damping: Due to the wide swing and substantial mass of the door, 165° hinges carry considerable momentum. It is strongly recommended to use concealed hinges / cabinet hinges with soft close damping or retrofit clip-on dampers. A soft-close mechanism gently brakes the door.
  • Drilling the wrong C-dimension: If the 35 mm hole is drilled too close to the edge, the material may tear out under load. If placed too far away, the door will not open fully because the door edge catches on the carcass. Follow the manufacturer's exact specifications.
  • Clashing with internal drawers: Although the hinge offers zero protrusion, the hinge arm itself occupies considerable internal space. Always allow sufficient clearance when installing internal drawers (usually by adding spacer strips beneath the drawer runners) so that the full-extension runner does not catch on the hinge arm.
  • Using too few hinges: A door fitted with wide-angle hinges experiences significant leverage forces. For doors taller than 1600 mm or weighing over 12 kg, fit at least three, or ideally four hinges to prevent the door from dropping over time.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

Why use a 165° hinge instead of a 110° hinge? A standard hinge (see 110-degree concealed hinges / cabinet hinges) leaves the door edge within the clear opening width of the carcass. A 165° hinge swings the door completely out of the way, which is indispensable for fitting internal drawers or achieving unobstructed access in corner units.

Can I combine a 165° hinge with push-to-open? This is technically feasible, but requires an un-sprung hinge (without self-closing mechanism) or specialised tip-on mechanisms with a strong magnet. A soft-close hinge must never be combined with a mechanical push-to-open system, as the damper spring works against the release mechanism.

Does every 165° hinge fit onto every mounting plate? No. Fixing mechanisms (clip-on systems, slide-on) and the base heights of mounting plates vary between manufacturers and product ranges. To maintain the correct kinematics, always stay within the same manufacturer's system.
