However, holding an overhead door open while reaching inside can be frustrating without the right hardware. Installing gas struts provides a reliable, hands-free solution, allowing top-hung cabinet doors to glide open smoothly and stay securely in place. Mastering the process of fitting gas struts requires precise marking, careful alignment, and ensuring your cabinet hinges are properly configured to take the load.

Choosing the Right Strut Rating and Hinges

Before beginning the installation, check that your hardware suits the size and weight of the flap. Gas struts are rated in Newtons (N), typically ranging from 50N to 150N for domestic cabinetry. Using a strut that is too weak will cause the door to sag, while one that is too strong can force the flap open violently or make it difficult to pull down.

  • Weight and size: Lightweight acrylic or thin MDF doors generally require 50N to 80N struts, whereas heavier solid wood doors may require 100N to 120N struts per side.
  • Hinge compatibility: Upward-opening flaps require appropriate hinges, such as standard concealed cup hinges (with suitable opening angles like 90° or 110°) or dedicated flap hinges that mount flush against the top panel.
  • Balanced support: For doors wider than 600 mm, it is best practice to use two struts—one on each side—to prevent the door leaf from twisting over time.

Tools and Preparation

Proper preparation ensures clean pilot holes and prevents splitting the cabinet carcass or door panel. Gather the following tools before starting:

  • Tape measure and steel rule
  • Pencil or fine marking awl
  • Cordless drill with a 2 mm pilot bit
  • Pozi screwdriver (PZ2)
  • Safety glasses
  • Standard gas strut fittings and mounting brackets (usually supplied with circular carcase plates and flat door brackets)

Step-by-Step Installation Process

Accurate positioning is critical when fitting gas struts to ensure the piston rod can fully compress when the door closes without binding against the cabinet frame.

1. Mount the Door Hinges First

Ensure your cabinet flap is fully hung and aligned using your chosen hinges. Adjust the hinge screws so the door sits square in the frame with consistent reveals around all edges.

2. Position the Carcase Bracket

Open the cabinet door to the desired angle (typically 90 degrees or slightly wider). Position the side-panel mounting bracket inside the carcase. As a general guide, the bracket fixing point is placed approximately 200 mm to 250 mm down from the top edge and roughly 25 mm to 30 mm back from the front edge. Mark the screw holes with a pencil, drill shallow pilot holes, and secure the bracket with wood screws.

3. Fix the Door Bracket

Mark the corresponding position on the inside face of the door flap. This is usually located roughly 80 mm to 100 mm down from the top hinge line and inset to align parallel with the carcase bracket. Pre-drill carefully, taking care not to drill entirely through the front face of the door, and screw the bracket into place.

4. Attach the Gas Strut

Most modern struts use ball-and-socket connectors that snap directly onto the bracket pins. Always install the strut with the thicker cylinder body attached to the carcase and the thinner piston rod pointing downwards towards the door when open. This orientation ensures the internal seals remain lubricated by the hydraulic fluid inside the chamber.

Fine-Tuning and Troubleshooting

Once both ends are snapped onto their ball joints, gently close the door to test the motion. If the door does not close fully, the bracket on either the carcase or the door is mounted too far forward, preventing the piston from retracting completely. If the door does not stay open, the strut rating may be too low for the weight of the flap, or the mounting points may need to be adjusted to alter the leverage geometry.
