  • For top plates: Place a short spirit level or a square against the base of the cabinet. Is the timber indented or swollen at the screw position?

Step 5: Exact Alignment and Reassembly

Refit the castor to the furniture. If the mounting surface exhibits unevenness, you must adjust it.

  1. Levelling for plate mounting: If the plate is tilted, place thin washers (e.g. 1 mm or 1.5 mm thickness) under the corresponding screw holes between the castor and the furniture base until the plate sits completely flat. Tighten the screws in a crosswise pattern.

Place the furniture back onto its castors. Load it with its typical weight. A lowboard for TV equipment behaves completely differently when empty compared to when media devices are installed on it.

Push the furniture one metre forwards and backwards. Next, move it in a smooth figure of eight. All four castors must swivel in synchronisation. If a castor continues to block when changing direction, re-check the perpendicular alignment of that specific castor under load.

Common Mistakes in Castor Installation

Even with a freshly cleaned slewing ring, manoeuvrability can be restricted if fundamental technical parameters have been ignored.

1. Exceeding Dynamic Load Capacity

Every castor has a defined load capacity in kilograms. A common error is miscalculating the required load distribution. Because floors are rarely completely level, in practice often only three out of four castors carry the entire weight. The formula for fitters is: (Net weight of furniture + maximum payload) / 3 = required load capacity per castor. If a heavy unit like a wardrobe for 2 people is mounted on standard castors, the ball cage in the slewing ring deforms under continuous static load, permanently blocking the castor.

2. Incorrect Screw Selection

If countersunk screws are used on a top plate with flat (non-countersunk) holes, the screw head will not centre itself. It will protrude and, in the worst case, rub against the rotating fork. Always use pan head screws (round-head screws) for non-countersunk plate holes.

3. Wrong Tread for the Floor Surface

A perfectly rotating castor is of little use if the wheel slips across the floor instead of rolling. Without wheel rotation, there is no leverage for the slewing ring. The basic rule of hardware fitting applies:

  • Hard tread (e.g. polyamide) for soft floors such as carpet.
