1. Inspect Substrate and Align the Furniture
Before marking the drill hole positions, the chest of drawers must be completely level. An uneven floor leads to twisting of the carcase. Place a spirit level on the top panel (the uppermost horizontal board). If the floor slopes, you should level the carcase. This is achieved most precisely when adjustable furniture legs are fitted to the underside. These can be adjusted millimetre by millimetre via a thread until the unit stands perfectly horizontal and plumb.
2. Define Fixing Points on the Carcase
Choosing the correct anchor point on the piece of furniture is crucial. A common mistake is securing the anti-tip bracket to the thin back panel. This is usually made of only 3 mm thick HDF (high-density fibreboard) and tears out immediately under tensile load.
The brackets or straps must strictly be screwed into the solid material of the side panels or the top panel. These components usually consist of 16 mm or 18 mm thick chipboard or MDF. Use short round-headed screws (pan head) for fastening into the wood. For a material thickness of 16 mm, a screw length of 15 mm is ideal to prevent bursting through the visible surface.
3. Bridging Wall Gaps and Skirting Boards

- Concrete and solid brick: Use a rotary hammer and standard expansion plugs (e.g. 8 mm). The drill hole depth should equal the plug length plus 10 mm.
- Plasterboard / Drywall: Standard plugs will not hold here. Strictly use hollow-wall metal anchors or specialised plasterboard plugs that knot or anchor behind the board.
Thoroughly clean the drill dust from the hole after drilling so that the plug can develop its full expansion force.
5. Final Assembly and Tightening
Now screw the brackets to the wall and then to the carcase. The connection must ultimately act like a tightly tensioned anchor chain – the piece of furniture must not move a single millimetre forward when pulling on the top panel. After installation, carry out a manual load test by pulling firmly on the front edge of the chest.
Connecting the Changing Top and Furniture Components Securely
A changing station often consists of a regular chest of drawers and a separate changing top attachment placed on it. This attachment must also be mechanically and securely connected to the main carcase. Merely resting it on top or securing it with double-sided tape is insufficient.
Use professional furniture connectors to join the panels. Metal mending plates screwed to the back prevent the changing top from sliding. High-grade systems frequently utilise cam and pin connectors or an insert nut (Rampa insert) with a metric thread, which enable an invisible, heavy-duty connection between timber components.
Optimising Safety and Ergonomics at the Changing Station
Once structural stability is ensured, moving hardware fittings and the immediate environment should also be adapted to the specific demands of a nursery.
Safe Wall Storage
Space on the changing table is limited. Care essentials, towels, or clothing should be within easy reach, but kept out of the child's reach. Installing wall hooks directly beside or above the chest of drawers is a proven solution. A double wall hook provides compact hanging space for flannels and towels without protruding far into the room. Ensure proper wall plug anchoring here as well, as hooks are often pulled forcefully in passing.
Drawers and Doors: Dampers and Handles
Loud slamming of doors or drawers can wake or startle a sleeping baby. If the existing hinges do not have integrated soft-close mechanisms, they can be retrofitted. A clip-on or screw-on door damper gently cushions the furniture door over the last few centimetres and pulls it silently into an inset or overlay position.
Furthermore, sharp or angular handles at toddler head height represent an injury risk. Replace sharp metal handles with rounded designs. A solid, round furniture knob made of wood or matte plastic significantly minimises the risk of knocks and can be swapped over in seconds using a standard M4 thread screw.
Protection Against Unauthorised Access
As soon as a child starts crawling and pulling themselves up, the lower drawers of the changing unit become interesting. If care products, creams, or medicines are stored there, these compartments must be locked. Installing furniture locks provides permanent security. For drawers, surface-mounted rim locks fitted to the inside of the front are ideal. The lock cylinder engages behind a strike plate on the carcase or rail.

Metal brackets for anti-tip restraints usually have flat drill holes without a countersink. If a screw with a countersunk head is driven in, the head will not seat flat. Old building walls often have a thick layer of plaster (sometimes up to 20 mm), which has no load-bearing capacity. If you use a 40 mm long screw, it may only penetrate 20 mm into the structural masonry. Measure the plaster thickness and add it to the standard anchoring depth of the plug.
Whenever possible, screw the anti-tip bracket into the face of a chipboard panel, not into the narrow edge (end grain). The screw receives little grip between the pressed chips along the edge and may split the material.
