When building or retrofitting desks and office pedestals, joiners and fitters inevitably face the question of the correct locking mechanism. The choice of hardware affects not only the final drilling and routing pattern in the carcass, but also the installation effort and compatibility with the fitted runner systems. What is a central locking system?
A central locking system is a mechanical setup designed to secure an entire drawer block with a single turn of a key. The core of this system is the locking bar (often designed as a rotating rod or lifting bar) running vertically inside the carcass.
When the lock cylinder is operated, a mechanism converts the rotary movement into a vertical lifting motion or a rotation of the bar. Locking pins are attached to this bar at predefined intervals. Upon locking, these pins engage with corresponding cutouts on the drawer sides or directly block the drawer systems, preventing any of the drawers from being pulled out.
There are mainly two designs of central locking systems:
- Front central lock: The cylinder sits in the furniture front (usually in the top drawer or front panel).
- Side central lock: The cylinder is set into the side panel of the carcass.
Installation requires high precision. The distance between the locking pins must be matched exactly to the drawer grid dimensions. Additionally, sufficient clearance is needed between the drawer side and the inner carcass wall to accommodate the bar (typically 15 mm to 18 mm).
What is an individual lock?
An individual lock operates completely independently and secures precisely the drawer in which it is installed. In desk construction, a classic cylinder lock (often as a screw-on lock or mortise lock) is typically used for this purpose.
The mechanism is direct and simple: turning the key moves a locking tongue (also known as a deadbolt). With a typical rotation angle of 90° or 180°, this tongue slides behind a strike plate fastened to the carcass, top panel, or cross-rail.
Key technical parameters when selecting an individual lock include:
- Cylinder diameter: The size of the required hole in the front (standards in the furniture industry are frequently 19 mm or 22 mm).
- Backset: The distance from the centre of the cylinder to the edge of the lock (for example 20 mm, 25 mm, or 30 mm). The backset defines how far from the edge of the drawer front the hole must be drilled.
- Cylinder length: Must be matched to the material thickness of the front (e.g. 19 mm chipboard).
Technical comparison of differences
To make the right choice for the respective piece of furniture, the systems must be compared based on their structural and mechanical characteristics.
- Installation effort and tolerances: Fitting a drawer lock for an individual drawer requires only an exact borehole in the front and fastening the strike plate to the carcass. A central locking system, on the other hand, tolerates no height errors. The drawers must run absolutely parallel and at the exact grid spacing. If a drawer sags by just 2 mm, the locking pin can jam.
- Space requirements in the carcass: Individual locks require space behind the front and a stop point on the carcass. Central locks strictly require a defined gap between the drawer side and the carcass wall for the rod mechanism.
- Interaction with fittings: A central locking system behaves like a main switch in a fuse box that turns off an entire row, whereas an individual lock acts like a specific light switch. When using a central lock, combining it with high-quality full extension drawer runners that offer high lateral stability is recommended. If the drawers wobble sideways, the pins on the locking bar will not engage cleanly.
- Security aspect: A central lock secures the entire pedestal (e.g. for personnel files). An individual lock is ideal when only a specific compartment (e.g. for cash or private valuables) needs to be locked, while other compartments remain accessible to colleagues.
Which solution is suitable for which case?
The choice between a central lock and an individual lock is primarily dictated by the architecture of the furniture and the usage scenario.
When to install a central locking system:
- Mobile pedestals and fixed pedestals: The classic application. Here, the user expects to secure all documents with a single turn when leaving the workspace.
- Office larder units: When vertical pull-outs with multiple levels need to be locked simultaneously against unauthorised access.
- Symmetrical drawer blocks: If the unit features three or more identical drawers stacked above each other, installing a locking bar is more efficient than drilling four separate cylinders.
When to install an individual lock:
- Shallow desk drawers: For single, wide drawers directly below the desk top (often used as a stationery tray), there is no carcass for a vertical bar. Here, a furniture lock cylinder is the only technically sensible solution.
- Asymmetrical furniture: When drawers have varying widths or are offset, a central bar cannot be mounted continuously.
- Targeted access control: If only the cash drawer at a reception desk needs to be locked, while the remaining compartments for forms must remain freely accessible.
Integration into the modern desk
Planning locking hardware should never be done in isolation. It is part of the overall workspace ergonomics. Anyone constructing a desk must also consider cable management and internal accessories.
While locks provide external security, an anti-slip mat for drawers ensures that contents do not slide against the internal locking mechanism during dynamic opening and closing (especially with handleless fronts and push-to-open mechanisms).
Likewise, when positioning furniture locks at the top of a desk, care must be taken that they do not clash with cable management.
