Chipboard vs. MDF vs. Solid Wood
Solid wood consists of naturally grown timber, MDF of finely defibred wood pressed under pressure, whilst chipboard is made from glued, coarser wood chips.
Choosing the correct board material is a decisive factor in furniture construction regarding stability, weight, and suitability for specific rooms. Anyone planning their own furniture or assembling prefabricated units inevitably faces the question of which material best meets the technical requirements of the project. Each of these three materials has specific characteristics regarding load-bearing capacity, moisture resistance, and machining with tools.
What is Chipboard?
Classic chipboard (technically known as particle board or flat-pressed board) is the standard material in modern furniture construction. It consists of wood chips of various sizes mixed with synthetic resin glue and pressed into boards under heat and high pressure. Coarser chips are located inside the board (the core layer) to provide static strength. The outer surface layers consist of very fine chips to ensure a smooth surface.
In furniture construction, chipboard is used almost exclusively in coated form. The surface is covered with paper impregnated with melamine resin. This decor provides the board with its visual finish – for example, a solid colour surface or a wood reproduction such as Sonoma oak. The cut edges of the boards are exposed and must be sealed with edging (usually made from ABS plastic) to prevent moisture penetration. Standard thicknesses for furniture carcasses are typically 16 mm or 19 mm.
What is MDF (Medium-Density Fibreboard)?
The MDF board is manufactured not from chips, but from the finest wood fibres. The timber is mechanically defibred, mixed with binding agents, and subsequently pressed into a homogeneous board. The result is a material with a very high density and a uniform structure free of voids.
This fine structure is the greatest technical advantage of MDF. The edges and surfaces can be machined exceptionally well. Profiles, grooves, or panel patterns can be routed into the board without the material fraying. For this reason, MDF is frequently used for lacquered furniture fronts or profiled doors. Untreated MDF is highly absorbent and requires thorough priming before painting. For cabinet back panels, the related, even more densely pressed HDF board (High-Density Fibreboard) is often used in thicknesses of 3 mm to 5 mm.
What is Solid Wood?
Solid wood is timber grown directly from the tree trunk. It is sawn into planks, dried, and processed further for furniture making. To produce wide surfaces for furniture components, individual solid timber staves (lamellae) are glued together. A distinction is made here between continuous staves (giving a calmer grain pattern) and finger jointing, where shorter pieces of timber interlock like gears at the ends and are glued together.
The most important technical aspect of this material: solid wood responds to the room climate and behaves like a natural sponge that swells in high humidity and shrinks in dry conditions. Experts refer to this by saying that the wood "moves". When constructing furniture from pure timber, this expansion must strictly be taken into account to prevent cracking or warping of the components.
The Main Differences in Detail
To select the right material for a project, the physical properties must be compared directly with one another.
- Weight and Density: Due to the heavy compression of its fibres, MDF has the highest self-weight. Chipboard is significantly lighter owing to air pockets between the coarse chips. The weight of solid wood varies drastically depending on the tree species – spruce is very light, whereas oak or beech are heavy.
- Load-Bearing Capacity and Deflection: Flexural strength plays a significant role in shelving. A shelf made of solid wood deflects noticeably less under load over a span of 800 mm than a chipboard shelf of equal thickness. Although MDF is heavy, it has lower flexural strength than solid wood.
- Moisture Resistance: Raw chipboard swells immediately upon contact with water and loses its structural integrity. Standard MDF is likewise not waterproof and swells at the edges. Solid wood tolerates moisture better, provided it is regularly oiled or lacquered, but tends to warp during substantial climatic fluctuations.
- Surface Treatment: Chipboard is generally purchased pre-laminated. MDF is the ideal substrate for opaque paint finishes. Solid wood is mostly only oiled, waxed, or treated with clear lacquer to preserve the natural grain.
Which Material for Which Application?
The choice between the three materials depends on the type of furniture and where it is installed.
Chipboard is the most economical and dimensionally stable solution for classic furniture carcasses. When constructing a functional wooden desk or the interior of a large wardrobe, melamine-faced chipboard is the logical choice. It does not warp, is easy to clean, and the weight remains manageable.
MDF displays its strengths in styling. For smooth, high-gloss lacquered kitchen fronts or profiled country-style doors, MDF is essential. Due to its high density and vibration-damping properties, MDF is also favoured for loudspeaker enclosures.
Solid wood is used where durability, a natural texture, and high load capacity are required. A solid wood wardrobe or substantial solid wood living room wall units bring a climate-regulating effect and a robust structure to living areas. Solid timber is also frequently the material of choice for heavily used pieces such as a wooden chest of drawers or a dining table, as scratches and dents on oiled surfaces can simply be sanded out. For wet rooms, a wooden bathroom cabinet made from solid, oil-treated timbers such as teak or oak is often better suited than inadequately sealed chipboard.

Screwing into Chipboard
Care must be taken when driving screws into chipboard, as the coarse chip structure can tear out easily. Use dedicated wood screws and furniture screws featuring a deep thread. For cabinet making, wood screws 4mm in diameter are a common size. Pre-drilling is often not strictly necessary in the face of chipboard, but it is mandatory along the edges (end grain) to prevent the board from splitting. Do not overtighten the screws – if the thread "strips" in the chipboard, the screw loses all grip. Ensure you use the matching drive on your screwdriver or cordless drill, usually PZ (Pozidriv) or TX (Torx), to avoid damaging the screw head.
Screwing and Routing in MDF
MDF has a strong tendency to split when screws are inserted along the edges. Exact pre-drilling is absolutely essential here. If using a 4 mm screw, pre-drill with a 3 mm wood drill bit. Drill the hole roughly 2 mm deeper than the length of the screw, as the drilling dust compacts inside the hole and could otherwise burst the board. Cam and dowel fixings or wooden dowels are also ideal for concealed joints.
Working with Solid Wood
Solid wood requires sharp tools. When cutting across the grain, the wood tears out easily, which is why a saw blade with a high tooth count should be used. Pre-drilling is also necessary here, particularly with hardwoods like oak or beech. Because solid wood moves, table tops or wide components are often not fixed rigidly, but instead secured using tabletop fasteners (shrinkage brackets) or slotted holes. This allows the wood to expand and contract without cracking or cupping.

Can I paint melamine-coated chipboard? Yes, this is possible, but it requires preparation. The smooth melamine surface must first be keyed with fine sandpaper (240 grit). Afterwards, a dedicated adhesion promoter (primer) is essential before applying the topcoat.
Why are screws no longer holding in my chipboard? If a screw has been overtightened in chipboard, the threaded hole is stripped (the chips have crumbled). You can repair the hole by filling it with a mixture of wood glue and sawdust, letting it cure, and drilling again. Alternatively, use a threaded insert (insert nut) to anchor a metric thread into the board.
Is MDF suitable for the bathroom? Standard MDF swells quickly in high humidity. For bathrooms, moisture-resistant MDF (often identifiable by a green-tinted core) should be used. Furthermore, all edges and drilled holes must be meticulously sealed with lacquer or edge banding.
What does System 32 mean in furniture making? System 32 is an international standard in furniture manufacturing, primarily used for chipboard and MDF carcasses.
