Standard subfloors, whether concrete screed or aged floorboards, rarely provide a perfectly flat surface. Selecting the correct leg height, understanding load requirements, and fitting your plinth clips properly ensures your worktops stay level and your cabinetry remains rock-solid for years to come.
Selecting the Right Height and Weight Capacity
Base units in the UK typically sit on legs ranging between 100 mm and 150 mm in height, with 150 mm being the standard trade dimension to accommodate standard appliance heights and plinth boards. When choosing adjustable feet for kitchen cabinets, you should always check both the nominal height and the adjustment range, which usually provides around 15 mm to 25 mm of thread movement to compensate for dips and rises in the floor.
Weight capacity is equally vital. While individual cabinets might seem light, consider the cumulative weight once you add solid timber or stone worktops, stacked crockery, and heavy cast iron cookware:
- Heavy-duty plastic feet: Moulded from high-impact ABS or polypropylene, these are completely immune to water damage from floor mopping or minor leaks. Quality plastic legs typically support 100 kg to 150 kg per foot.

Fitting cabinet legs before the carcasses are placed in position makes the whole job significantly easier. Follow these practical steps for a secure installation:
- Position the mounting plates: Invert the cabinet carcass. Position the leg mounting plates roughly 50 mm to 70 mm in from the side panels. For front legs, ensure they are set back far enough so the plinth board and clip can sit flush beneath the cabinet frame.
- Fix with appropriate screws: Secure the mounting blocks using short wood screws (typically 15 mm or 18 mm, depending on the thickness of the base panel) to avoid piercing through into the cabinet interior.
- Insert the legs: Push or twist the leg shafts into the mounting sockets until firmly seated.
- Rough levelling: Wind all legs out to the approximate target height using a tape measure before flipping the carcass upright.
Levelling Cabinets on Uneven Floors
Once your carcasses are upright and lined up along the wall, precise levelling begins. Start with the unit at the highest point of the floor and adjust its legs to the desired worktop datum line. Use a long spirit level across the top rails—both side-to-side and front-to-back.
As you add adjoining units, screw them together through the side panels using cabinet connecting bolts before fine-tuning the legs underneath. Adjust the threaded foot by hand or using a flat screwdriver slot at the base until all feet make firm contact with the floor, eliminating any rocking or sagging along the run.
Attaching Plinth Clips for a Clean Finish
Plinths (or kickboards) conceal the void beneath your base units while protecting the underside from dust and debris. Getting plinths to clip on securely requires accurate alignment:
- Measure clip positions: Measure the centre-to-centre distance of your front legs and transfer these marks onto the back of the plinth board.
- Secure the clips: Screw the plinth brackets to the rear of the board, allowing enough clearance so the spring clips align directly with the leg shafts.
- Snap into place: Slide the plinth under the cabinets and push firmly until the clips snap around the cylindrical legs. This system holds the board rigid while allowing easy removal for future maintenance or plumbing access.
