Guide to Adjustable Legs for Kitchen Units
Installing a brand-new kitchen or replacing existing base cabinetry requires a solid, level foundation. Floors in British homes are rarely perfectly flat, especially in period properties or over uneven screed and floorboards. Using adjustable legs for kitchen units is the trade-standard method for lifting cabinets off the ground, protecting them from minor floor spills, and aligning worktop runs accurately across the entire room.
Why Base Cabinets Need Adjustable Legs
Modern fitted kitchens rely on modular carcass construction, where individual base units are joined together side-by-side. Trying to level these units using timber shims or packing blocks underneath fixed panels is time-consuming and unreliable. Fitting dedicated kitchen unit adjustable legs offers several distinct advantages:
- Precision levelling: Each leg can be wound up or down independently by hand or using a flat screwdriver from inside or underneath the unit.
- Moisture protection: Lifting chipboard and MDF carcasses 100 mm to 150 mm off the subfloor prevents dampness from seeping into raw board edges during floor mopping or minor leaks.
- Plinth integration: Standard cabinet legs are designed to work seamlessly with plinth clips, allowing kickboards to snap securely into place to hide the void beneath the cabinets.
- Weight distribution: Quality feet transfer the substantial load of solid stone worktops, integrated appliances, and loaded drawers directly to the subfloor.
Choosing the Right Height and Adjustment Range
In standard UK kitchen joinery, the typical base unit height is 720 mm, paired with a standard plinth (kickboard) height of either 100 mm or 150 mm. This achieves a total cabinet height of 870 mm, which becomes around 900 mm to 910 mm once a standard 30 mm or 40 mm worktop is fitted.
When selecting your fittings, look at the base height and the adjustment travel:
- 100 mm legs: Typically offer an adjustment range between 90 mm and 125 mm, ideal for lower work surfaces or 100 mm plinth profiles.
- 150 mm legs: Generally adjust between 140 mm and 170 mm, which is the most common standard for contemporary fitted kitchens using 150 mm plinths.
Always ensure the adjustment range covers the highest and lowest points of your floor run. Take time to survey the floor with a long spirit level or laser level before setting out your cabinet heights.
Weight Capacity and Positioning
Base units require four legs per standard cabinet (or five for wide corner carcasses). High-grade plastic cabinet feet, commonly manufactured from heavy-duty polypropylene or ABS, are engineered to carry considerable loads. A set of four legs easily supports well over 400 kg when weight is distributed evenly.
To fit the legs securely:
- Position the mounting base blocks approximately 50 mm to 70 mm in from the side panels of the carcass to align with the vertical load-bearing gables.
- For the front legs, set them back far enough so the plinth board sits flush behind the cabinet doors, usually around 50 mm to 60 mm from the front edge.
- Screw the base plate into the underside of the cabinet base using 15 mm or 18 mm wood screws (ensuring screws do not penetrate right through the internal base shelf).
- Push and twist the leg section firmly into the mounting collar.
Securing Kickboards with Plinth Clips
Once all cabinets are levelled, joined together, and fixed back to the wall, the void beneath is concealed using a plinth board. Plinth clips attach directly to the rear of the kickboard and snap onto the shaft of the front adjustable legs.
Ensure you align the clip height accurately with the centre of the round leg shafts. Most clips can be screwed directly into timber plinths or slotted into plastic plinth brackets. This creates a friction-fit connection that holds the kickboard upright and flush, while still allowing easy removal if you ever need access to plumbing, underfloor heating manifolds, or appliance isolation points.
