Choosing Hardware for Made-to-Measure Cupboards
Designing and assembling a made to measure cupboard is one of the most effective ways to maximise awkward alcoves, sloping ceilings, or non-standard room layouts. While bespoke carcass panels define the outer shape, the internal hardware determines how well the unit performs over years of daily use. Selecting the correct concealed hinges, structural fixings, and smooth drawer runners ensures your custom cabinetry feels as solid and effortless to operate as high-end factory furniture.
Selecting the Right Concealed Hinges
Standard off-the-shelf units generally rely on basic overlay hinges, but custom cabinetry often demands more specialised opening geometry. Getting the door action right depends entirely on how your doors sit against the carcass:
- Full Overlay: The door completely covers the front edge of the cabinet side panel. This is the standard choice for modern, modular layouts.
- Half Overlay: Essential when two adjacent doors share a single central dividing panel (typically 18 mm thick).
- Inset Hinges: Used when the door sits flush inside the carcass frame, offering a traditional, premium look that requires precise 2 mm to 3 mm clearance gaps around all edges.
- Wide-Angle Hinges (155° to 170°): Crucial if your made to measure cupboard features internal pull-out drawers or wire baskets that need to slide past the open door without catching.
Always verify the hinge cup diameter (standard 35 mm) and drilling depth before boring your bespoke doors.
Drawer Runners and Internal Clearances
When fitting drawers inside cupboards made to measure, accurate internal dimensioning is essential. Ball-bearing runners and undermount soft-close slides require specific side clearances—typically 12.7 mm per side for side-mounted runners, or precise sub-drawer construction dimensions for undermount versions.
For heavy storage units, such as pantry larder units or utility cupboards, opt for full-extension runners. These allow complete access to the rear of the drawer box without placing undue strain on the mounting screws.
Connecting Fittings and Carcass Stability
Bespoke cabinets built on-site or flat-packed for awkward stairwells require rigid, dependable joining methods. Relying solely on wood glue and standard wood screws can cause alignment issues during final installation.
- Cam and Dowel Connectors: Allow for clean, invisible joints with standard 32 mm system drilling patterns.
- Confirmat Screws: Excellent for direct edge-to-face joining of chipboard and MDF, providing superior pull-out resistance compared to standard multi-purpose screws.
- Corner Brackets and Metal Angle Blocks: Ideal for reinforcing internal shelving spans and securing the entire carcass rigidly to the structural wall.
Catches and Push-to-Open Mechanisms
For handleless, minimalist designs, push-to-open latches (mechanical or magnetic) remove the need for external knobs or pulls. When designing a cupboard made to measure with push-latches, ensure you use unsprung concealed hinges, as standard self-closing spring hinges will fight the push mechanism and prevent smooth release.
Levelling Legs and Plinth Fittings
Uneven floors are the primary cause of misaligned doors and sticking drawers in bespoke joinery. Adjustable cabinet feet hidden behind clip-on plinths allow you to level the entire carcass precisely before mounting doors or securing internal runners. This step isolates the cabinet structure from floor imperfections, ensuring long-term hardware reliability.
