Illuminating the kitchen worktop is a classic task in furniture making and kitchen fitting. If LED strips are adhered directly to coated chipboard, the lack of cooling quickly leads to diode failure. Furthermore, unscattered light produces glare and casts harsh shadows. A technically sound setup therefore always consists of the LED tape, a carrier profile with a diffuser, and a power supply unit that steps down mains voltage to the operating voltage of the LEDs.

When selecting components, electrical and mechanical parameters interlink. Planning always begins with the required amount of light and the total length of the run to be illuminated.
Voltage: 12 V or 24 V
LED strips for furniture construction run on low voltage. The choice between 12 V and 24 V depends on the run length. In 12-volt systems, a measurable voltage drop occurs over longer distances. This means that the strip shines less brightly at the end of the run than at the feed point. From a continuous length of 5000 mm, a 24-volt system is strictly necessary, as the higher voltage carries current with fewer losses.

Step 1: Cutting and Mounting the Profile
Measure the underside of the cabinets. Cut the aluminium profile to size using the hacksaw. The opal plastic diffuser should be cut separately to avoid cracking. Pre-drill the profile every 400 mm to 500 mm and screw it to the cabinet base using short countersunk screws (e.g. 3.0 x 12 mm). Take care not to drill right through the panel.
