Choosing between a magnetic catch and a mechanical push system significantly defines the cabinet carcass construction, the gap reveal, and the choice of hinges.

What is a Magnetic Catch?

A magnetic catch is a passive fitting consisting of a plastic or metal housing with an integrated magnet, alongside a metallic counterpart. This counterpart, the counterplate, is screwed to the inside of the furniture door.

When the door closes, the magnet attracts the plate and keeps the front flush against the carcass. The holding force is specified in kilograms and typically ranges between 2 kg and 4 kg for standard furniture. To open the door, the magnetic force must be overcome by pulling manually on the front edge. Magnetic catches require no inward trigger travel. What is a Push-to-Open Latch?

If a door no longer closes flush due to material warping, the magnet reliably pulls it tight against the carcass. Magnetic catches (combined with a clip-on glass counterplate) are also the standard choice for glass fronts in display cabinets where a showcase lock would disrupt the aesthetic.

Applications for Push-to-Open Latches

When planning modern wall units, push-to-open latches are the preferred choice. The flush, handleless appearance of modern wooden or high-gloss units can only be realised in this manner. Because fronts are often heavy, the ejection spring force must be precisely matched to the door weight. Many manufacturers offer the plunger with an integrated magnetic tip. This additionally secures the door to the carcass when closed and prevents it from popping open in light draughts.

Installation and Adjustment

Installing both systems requires precision, yet the execution differs.

Magnetic catch installation: The housing is fastened inside to the carcass side panel or top panel using chipboard screws. Precise alignment of the counterplate on the door is vital. To locate the position, place a small piece of double-sided adhesive tape on the counterplate, attach it to the magnet, and press the door firmly shut. The plate will adhere to the exact drilling position on the door.

Push-to-open installation: Two variants exist. The flush-fit version requires a hole drilled directly into the front edge of the carcass side (typically 10 mm in diameter and 50 mm deep). The cylinder is simply inserted into the borehole. Alternatively, the latch clips into an adapter plate, which is screwed to the inside of the carcass as a cross mounting plate. Can I combine push-to-open latches with soft-close hinges? No, this is physically contradictory. Concealed cup hinges / cabinet hinges with soft-close damping brake the door when closing and pull it shut gently. A push-to-open latch, however, requires closing momentum to engage the internal spring. Damping neutralises this momentum, leaving the door standing slightly ajar.

Which hinge do I need for a push-to-open latch? For smooth operation, you need unsprung hinges without an automatic closing spring. A typical 110-degree concealed cup hinge without a spring mechanism ensures the door encounters no resistance when swinging open after the plunger triggers.
