The assembly of flat-pack furniture follows clear mechanical principles. The MIKEL series offers functional storage solutions for entrance halls, specifically designed for DIY assembly. Whether it is a compact shoe cabinet 60 cm wide or a larger model such as the shoe cabinet 100 cm wide, the basic construction logic remains identical. Sort the wooden panels by size and place them on a soft surface (such as the opened packaging box or a blanket) to prevent scratches to the finish.

The following tools are required for assembly:

  • Cross-head screwdriver (PZ size 2 profile)
  • Small hammer or rubber mallet for the wooden dowels
  • Tape measure or folding rule
  • Spirit level for final alignment
  • Hammer drill (for wall fixing)
  • Suitable drill bits (typically 6 mm or 8 mm for masonry)

Step-by-Step Assembly Guide

Assembly usually takes between 60 to 90 minutes. Proceed systematically and only tighten connecting elements fully when the respective panels are flush with one another.

Step 1: Preparing the Carcase Components

In the first step, insert the connecting elements into the side panels, bottom base, and top panel. Press the wooden dowels into the pre-drilled holes provided (usually 8 mm diameter). If they are stiff, a light tap with a hammer helps. Next, screw the connecting bolts for the cam connectors into the small holes, which are typically fitted with plastic threads. Ensure these bolts sit straight and are screwed in up to the collar.

Step 2: Assembling the Frame

Now connect the bottom panel and the top panel to one of the side walls. The wooden dowels and bolts slide into the corresponding edges of the horizontal panels. Place the round cam lock housings into the large holes (typically 15 mm diameter) of the panels. The small arrow on the housing must point towards the bolt. Turn the connector roughly 180 degrees clockwise using a screwdriver. The mechanism pulls the panels firmly and seamlessly together. Repeat this process with the second side panel.

Step 3: Fitting the Back Panel

The nailed back panel functions as the backbone of the construction and provides the carcase with the necessary torsional rigidity. Place the frame face down on the floor. Position the back panel on top and align it flush with the outer edges. Before driving in the first nail, the carcase must be perfectly square. Measure both diagonals of the unit (from corner to corner). If both measurements are identical to the millimetre, the cabinet is square. Secure the back panel using the supplied nails at intervals of about 10 cm to 15 cm along the edges.

Step 4: Attaching the Plinth Feet

Depending on the specific model within the MIKEL series, screw the furniture feet or glides to the underside of the base panel. Use the marked pre-drilled holes for this. On larger models, such as a shoe cabinet 120 wide, an additional central support foot is often fitted to prevent the base panel from sagging under load. Stand the cabinet upright once finished.

Step 5: Assembling the Drop-Down Mechanism

The fronts of the shoe compartments require specialised plastic fittings, known as shoe tipper inserts. These generally consist of two side brackets (which later rotate inside the side wall) and one or two intermediate shelves made of thin chipboard to hold the shoes. Screw the plastic side brackets to the rear of the front panels. Then insert the thin shelves into the grooves of the plastic parts and screw them into place.

Step 6: Inserting the Fronts into the Carcase

Fit the assembled drop-down compartments into the carcase. The plastic side components feature small pivot pins on their outer sides. Guide these pins into the corresponding pre-drilled holes on the inner faces of the carcase side walls. The compartment is usually inserted at a slight angle and then clicked into place with gentle pressure. Finally, fit the stop pins (often metal or plastic) in the upper section of the inner sides. These prevent the flap from tilting out completely when opened.

Wall Mounting and Anti-Tip Protection

A crucial step that must never be omitted with pull-down furniture is wall mounting. When all flaps are opened simultaneously and loaded with shoes, the centre of gravity shifts significantly forwards. In particular, a slim shoe cabinet 20 cm deep or a shoe cabinet 30 cm deep has a very small footprint and will inevitably tip over without securing.

Use the supplied mounting brackets. Fix these first to the top edge or the inside faces of the cabinet. Align the cabinet against the wall using a spirit level and mark the drill holes. Drill the holes, insert suitable wall plugs, and screw the cabinet firmly to the wall. Check stability by gently shaking the carcase.

Tips & Common Assembly Pitfalls

  • Incorrect screw length selected: Pay close attention to the length specifications in the instructions (e.g. 3.5 x 16 mm vs 3.5 x 30 mm). Using a screw that is too long on a front panel will break through the decorative finish on the visible exterior.
  • Fittings not engaging: If the cam lock does not turn, the bolt is often not screwed deeply enough into the side panel. Turn the bolt an extra half-turn in and try again.
  • Rubbing flaps: If the fronts rub against the side walls during opening, the cabinet is often out of plumb. Check alignment with a spirit level. On uneven floors, pack under the feet or adjust them if height-adjustable legs are fitted.

Can I assemble the cabinet on my own? The basic assembly of the carcase and the drop-down compartments can easily be managed by one person. However, a second person is strongly recommended for standing the completed unit upright and especially for aligning it during wall fixing.

Do large shoes fit into shallow models? This depends on the drop-down mechanism. A shoe cabinet with 30 cm depth generally provides room for shoes up to size 45, as they sit at an angle inside the compartment. In extremely slim models (20 cm), large shoes often need to be placed diagonally.
