To operate handleless doors and drawers, cabinet construction requires specialist hardware. DIY enthusiasts and fitters frequently face the choice between two systems that are often confused, yet technically operate in completely opposite ways. What Is Push-to-Open?
The push-to-open system (often referred to as tip-on) is a purely mechanical opening aid. It allows you to dispense with furniture handles entirely.
The mechanism is based on a spring-loaded touch latch. When you apply light pressure against the front (made of chipboard, MDF, or solid wood), a catch is released. The integrated spring pushes the drawer or cabinet door open by a few centimetres. Afterwards, the front can be easily gripped from behind by hand and opened fully. When closing, the front must be pressed shut again against the spring resistance until the mechanism audibly engages.
Special push to open drawer runners have this mechanism integrated directly into the runner. For cabinet doors, the ejector mechanism is usually drilled into the carcass side panel or screwed on as a separate component.
What Is Soft-Close?
Soft-close is not an opening aid, but a closing damper. The system ensures that drawers and doors are slowed down and gently pulled shut over the final few centimetres of travel. Loud slamming is technically prevented as a result.

- Need for handles: Push-to-open works entirely without handles. Soft-close requires a way to pull the unit — either traditional handles, profile handles, or recessed handle channels.
- Mechanical resistance: When closing a push-to-open drawer, force must be actively applied to re-tension the ejection spring. Soft-close pulls the drawer shut automatically from a certain point onwards.
Which System Is Best Suited for Each Case?
The choice of fitting depends heavily on the room, the weight of the furniture components, and the frequency of use.
When Push-to-Open Is the Right Choice
The system demonstrates its strengths in living and bedroom areas. A modern wall unit with smooth, high-gloss fronts or a minimalist sideboard in the hallway benefits enormously in visual terms from dispensing with handles. The push mechanism is also ideal for handleless chests of drawers where lighter items such as clothes or paperwork are stored.
When Soft-Close Represents the Better Solution
In the kitchen or bathroom, soft-close is the definitive standard. Heavy pots, pans, or crockery are frequently moved here. For a wide 60 cm kitchen cabinet pull-out, kitchen furniture handles are ergonomically more sensible, as heavy loads are easier to move by pulling rather than pushing.
Furthermore, users in the kitchen often have wet or dirty hands. Pressing on a handleless front would leave immediate marks. Can You Combine Both Systems?

With these, the drawer opens via a push, and when closing, it must be pushed shut with a slight swing so that the mechanism tensions before the dampening takes over across the final centimetres. Why does my push-to-open drawer no longer catch?
In most cases, the gap dimension is no longer correct. If the distance between the front and the carcass is less than 2 mm, the touch latch does not have enough travel to release or engage. The depth adjustment on the runner or hinge must be readjusted using the adjustment screw.
Can soft-close dampers be retrofitted to older cabinets?
Yes. For many standard hinges (especially those with full overlay or half overlay), clip-on dampers are available that attach directly onto the hinge arm.
