Shoot Bolt Lock vs. Espagnolette Lock: Securing Tall Cupboard Doors

A shoot bolt lock secures via a vertical thrust movement of the rods, whilst a rotary espagnolette lock secures the door through a rotational rod movement and engaging locking hooks.

Tall furniture doors present fitters and joiners with a structural challenge. From a door height of around 1500 mm, a single central locking point is no longer sufficient. The material – whether MDF, chipboard, or solid wood – tends to warp due to its own weight, temperature fluctuations, and humidity. A simple cam lock or cylinder lock keeps the door closed at the centre, but the top and bottom corners can stand proud.

Multi-point locking systems are used to keep a tall cupboard door flush against the carcass and securely locked. The two most common systems in furniture making are the shoot bolt lock and the espagnolette lock. Both belong to the furniture locks category, yet they differ fundamentally in their mechanics, space requirements, and installation method.

What is a shoot bolt lock?

A shoot bolt lock converts the turning movement of the key in the lock case into a linear, vertical movement. Like a machine gearbox, the mechanism translates rotation into thrust. Two profile rods are hooked into the top and bottom of the lock. When the key is turned, these rods slide upwards and downwards.

The ends of the rods extend into corresponding striking plates or locking bolts fitted to the top panel and base panel of the carcass. The system thus locks the door at three points: at the lock itself (often via an additional deadbolt) and at both ends of the rods.

This system is frequently referred to as a cupboard lock with rods. It generally has a very low profile, as the rods (usually semi-circular profiles made of metal or plastic) are guided directly along the inside of the door.

What is a rotary espagnolette lock?

The rotary espagnolette lock operates via rotation rather than thrust. When the key is turned, the lock case rotates a continuous or split profile rod (frequently a 6 mm or 8 mm round or D-profile) around its own axis.

Asymmetrical locking hooks are fitted to the ends of these rods. With a 90-degree turn of the rod, these hooks engage behind locking pins screwed firmly into the carcass. Due to the eccentric shape of the hooks, the door is actively pulled towards the carcass upon closing. This ensures an extremely firm fit, which is why this hardware is often used for heavy office cabinets or as wardrobe accessories on solid fronts.

A furniture lock cylinder usually serves as the drive, operated either directly via the key or via a surface-mounted turn knob.

Detailed differences: shoot bolt vs. rotary espagnolette

Although both systems serve the same purpose, they require different approaches during planning and installation.

1. Mechanics and power transmission

  • Shoot bolt lock: The force acts linearly. The rods slide up and down through rod guides. The contact pressure of the door against the carcass is primarily determined by the precise alignment and fitting of the striking plates.
  • Rotary espagnolette lock: The force acts rotationally. Due to their geometry, the locking hooks mechanically pull the door against the carcass when rotated. This effectively compensates for slight door warping.

2. Space requirements and profile thickness

  • Shoot bolt lock: The flat rods often require a depth of only 4 mm to 6 mm. They pass behind shelves without issue, provided there is a minimal shelf setback.
  • Rotary espagnolette lock: The rotating hooks at the ends require a defined swivel clearance. The distance between the inside of the door and the shelves must be calculated precisely so that the hooks do not rub against the wood when turning.

3. Installation of locking points

  • Shoot bolt lock: Requires striking plates or sockets that are recessed flush into, or surface-mounted onto, the top and base panels. The drill holes must align vertically with precision.
  • Rotary espagnolette lock: Uses locking pins screwed laterally into the carcass side wall or into the top/base panel. The hooks grip behind these pins.

Which lock is suitable for which application?

The choice between the two systems depends on the furniture design.

When to choose a shoot bolt lock? This system is ideal for modern cupboards made of laminated chipboard or MDF where an unobtrusive, low-profile mechanism on the inside of the door is desired. It is excellently suited to double-door cupboards where one door acts as the slave leaf (with a flush bolt) and the other as the master leaf (with a shoot bolt lock).

When to choose a rotary espagnolette lock? For very tall, heavy doors or solid wood furniture subject to significant movement, the rotary espagnolette lock has the advantage. The active pull of the locking hooks presses the door firmly into the rebate. It is also mechanically sturdier if the furniture requires increased resistance against being forced open.

Technical requirements for installation

Regardless of the chosen system, installing a multi-point lock requires precise workmanship and the correct tools.

Observe the backset

The backset is the distance from the door edge to the centre of the keyhole (cylinder centre). Standard dimensions in cabinet making are 15 mm, 20 mm, 25 mm, or 40 mm. The backset must be chosen so that the lock case does not collide with the edge and any furniture handle can be positioned harmoniously on the front.

Cutting the rods to size

The profile rods are supplied in standard lengths (e.g. 1000 mm or 1200 mm) and must be cut to the exact internal dimension of the door.

  1. Measure the internal clear height of the carcass.
  2. Deduct the height of the lock case.
  3. Account for the throw (usually 8 mm - 12 mm for shoot bolts) or the position of the hooks (for rotary espagnolettes).
  4. Cut using a fine-toothed metal saw. Deburr the cut edges with a file to prevent jamming in the guides.

Suitable fixings

Use only high-grade wood screws and furniture screws to mount the lock cases and rod guides. A PZ or TX drive prevents the tool from slipping. For 19 mm thick chipboard, screws measuring 3.5 x 15 mm or 3.5 x 17 mm have proven ideal.

Interaction with hinges

A rod lock can correct a slightly warped door, but it is no substitute for proper door hanging. Tall doors require at least four to five hinges. Use sturdy concealed hinges / 110-degree cupboard hinges and adjust them precisely in height, depth, and overlay before finally securing the striking plates of the rod lock.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Can I retrofit a basic furniture lock with a rod lock?

Yes, this is generally possible. The old lock case must be removed and replaced with a suitable shoot bolt or rotary espagnolette lock. Ensure that the new lock has the exact same backset so that the existing keyhole in the front can continue to be used. In addition, the rod guides must be screwed to the inside of the door and the striking plates fitted in the carcass.

Why does my tall cupboard door not close flush despite a rod lock?

If the door stands proud at the top or bottom despite being locked, there are two potential causes. With a shoot bolt lock, the striking plates are often not positioned deeply enough in the carcass – the rods engage before the door is fully closed. With a rotary espagnolette lock, the hooks might not engage behind the locking pins properly. In both cases, the concealed hinges should first be adjusted via their depth adjustment.

Do rod guides need to be lubricated?

As a rule, these systems are maintenance-free because metal rods usually slide in plastic guides. If the mechanism becomes stiff, a drop of silicone spray or dry PTFE spray can be applied to the guides and lock case. Never use resin-forming oils, as these combine with wood dust and jam the mechanism.
