Soft-Close vs. Push-to-Open — Which Opening System for Handleless Furniture?

The trend towards minimalist furniture design, such as modern media units or handleless kitchen fronts, presents joiners and fitters with a technical decision: how should the front move? In everyday language, the terms soft-close and push-to-open are often confused or equated. Technically speaking, however, they are two completely opposing mechanisms. This article explains the functional differences, installation requirements, and helps in selecting the suitable fitting system.
What is Soft-Close (Damping)?
Soft-close is a mechanism that decelerates the closing speed of a cabinet door or drawer element over the final centimetres of travel. As a result, the front closes silently and protects the material.
The technology relies on an integrated hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder (oil or gas damper). As soon as the door or drawer reaches a specific angle or insertion point, the damper engages and absorbs the kinetic energy. On cabinet doors, this damper is usually located directly inside the concealed hinge cup. A classic hinge with an opening angle of 110° and a cup diameter of 35 mm can nowadays be equipped with this function as standard. Suitable concealed hinges / cabinet hinges with damping (Soft Close) reliably support the weight of the door.
For drawers, the damping is integrated into the runner. Drawer runners with soft close actively pull the drawer in over the final millimetres while simultaneously braking it.
What is Push-to-Open (Tip-On)?
Push-to-open (often called tip-on) is a purely mechanical opening system for handleless fronts. It allows a door or drawer to be opened with light pressure using a hand, knee, or foot against the exterior of the front.
The mechanism consists of a tensioned spring and a release pin or magnet. When pressing against the front, a catch is released. The spring force then pushes the door or drawer out of the cabinet carcase by a short distance (usually 20 mm to 40 mm), allowing one to easily reach behind the edge and pull the element fully open. In furniture construction, this strictly requires the use of push to open drawer runners or special touch catches on hinged doors.
The Technical Differences at a Glance
Whilst soft-close acts like a shock absorber in a car that cushions movement, push-to-open functions like a tensioned spring that initiates movement. The essential differences in installation and planning:
- Gap size (trigger gap): Push-to-open strictly requires a gap between the front and the carcase of at least 2.5 mm to ensure sufficient travel to trigger the mechanism. Soft-close systems can sit flush.
- Hinges on standard doors: For push-to-open on doors, hinges without a self-closing spring must be used, as they would otherwise work against the release pin. Soft-close hinges, on the other hand, always feature a strong self-closing spring mechanism.
- Force required: A full extension runner with damping requires slightly more pulling force when opening to tension the self-closing spring. Push-to-open runners glide open without resistance once triggered.
- Load capacity: On very wide or heavy drawers, the ejection spring of a push-to-open system must be matched precisely to the weight. A synchronisation rod is often necessary here to prevent the drawer from jamming when pressed off-centre.
Which System Should I Choose for My Project?
The choice of system depends largely on the furniture's usage and ergonomics requirements.
When Soft-Close is the Right Choice
When handles or integrated handle profiles are present on the furniture, soft-close is the technical standard. The system demonstrates its strengths particularly under heavy loads. If tools, crockery, or heavy provisions are stored, heavy-duty drawer runners with damping bring the mass to a safe and quiet halt without damaging the back of the carcase over time. In households with children, damping also effectively prevents trapped fingers caused by slamming doors.
When Push-to-Open is the Right Choice
When an entirely flush, handleless design is required, push-to-open is essential. This is frequently the case with living room sideboards or kitchen islands. A typical dimension for deeper chests of drawers is 500 mm drawer runners with integrated push-to-open mechanisms. For wall cabinets that are difficult to reach, pressing the bottom edge of the front also makes access significantly easier.
FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions about Hardware Fittings
Can soft-close and push-to-open be combined?
Yes, but only with specialised, usually premium combination fittings. On standard drawer runners, the systems are mechanically mutually exclusive: push-to-open requires free outward movement, whilst soft-close pulls the drawer inward. However, there are sophisticated full extension drawer runners that combine both functions (push-to-open when opening, damping when closing) within a complex guide track mechanism.
Can I retrofit existing furniture with push-to-open?
On hinged doors, retrofitting is possible under certain conditions. A touch catch is mounted to the interior of the carcase. Important: The existing hinges (whether full overlay or inset) must not feature strong damping or a self-closing spring, otherwise the catch cannot push the door open. For drawers, the entire runner set must be replaced.
Do I need a full extension runner for push-to-open or is a single extension sufficient?
This depends on the desired level of convenience. A single extension runner opens to only around 75%, which restricts access to the rear area of the drawer. For modern furniture, a full extension runner is therefore generally used, fully exposing the drawer contents. Both runner variants are available with push-to-open mechanisms.
