Fitters and joiners regularly face the decision of which system is best suited for runners and hinges. In everyday conversation, these terms are often mixed up, yet technically they describe completely different mechanisms that differ fundamentally in their installation, compatibility, and day-to-day use.

What is Soft-Close (Damping)?

The soft-close system, technically referred to as damping, intervenes in the closing movement of a furniture component. The mechanism generally consists of a hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder. The cylinder provides resistance and absorbs the kinetic energy – similar to a shock absorber in a car. What is Push-to-Open (Tip-On)?

Pressing against the closed front from the outside releases a catch. The pre-tensioned spring extends and pushes the door or drawer open by a short distance (typically 30 mm - 50 mm), allowing your fingers to reach behind the front and pull the unit fully open.

When closing, the front must be actively pushed shut against the spring resistance until the mechanism audibly clicks back into place. For proper operation, a minimum front gap (trigger travel) of approximately 2.5 mm between the front and the front edge of the carcass is strictly required. What is Self-Closing?

Self-closing is the basic mechanical variant and is frequently confused with soft-close. A self-closing mechanism features a tension spring that engages over the final few centimetres of travel to pull the drawer into the closed position. The crucial difference: there is no damping element.

If a drawer is closed with momentum, the front slams unbraked against the carcass. The self-closing feature merely ensures that drawers are not accidentally left slightly ajar. This mechanism is frequently integrated into simple drawer runners with self-closing or classic roller runners. A roller drawer runner travels on plastic rollers and utilises a slight downward slope at the rear section of the track as a physical gravity pull-in.

To make the right choice for a specific project, the systems can be distinguished by key technical criteria:

  • Closing behaviour: Soft-close decelerates and pulls shut quietly. Self-closing pulls shut but does not decelerate (risk of slamming). Push-to-open must be manually pressed shut against spring resistance until latched.

As standard kitchen base units have standardised depths, 500 mm drawer runners are most commonly used. A full-extension drawer runner allows the drawer to extend 100%, making the rearmost section fully accessible.

Living Rooms and Minimalist Interiors

In modern furniture construction (sideboards, media units), a handleless look is in high demand. Push-to-open is the technical solution here. When installing touch latches on cabinet doors, ensure hinges without an automatic closing spring (unsprung hinges) are used, otherwise the hinge spring will work against the push-to-open plunger.

Workshops, Offices, and Budget-Sensitive Projects

For workshop tool trolleys, basic mobile pedestals, or utility room storage, standard self-closing is often entirely sufficient. Here, durability and straightforward function take precedence. The mechanism is robust, less prone to faults from dust and debris, and requires less fine-tuning during installation.

Can soft-close and push-to-open be combined?

In standard hardware fittings, both systems are mutually exclusive because they operate in physically opposite directions (soft-close pulls shut, push-to-open pushes open). Highly complex, synchronised runner systems that combine both do exist on the market, but they are significantly more complex to purchase and install. For standard furniture construction, one of the two systems is typically selected.

Why is my push-to-open drawer not closing properly?

If the front does not engage when pressed shut, the front gap is usually set too small. The mechanism requires an overtravel distance (approx. 2 mm - 3 mm behind the zero position of the carcass front edge) for the catch to engage. Adjustment is carried out via small adjustment dials on the runner or on the touch latch housing.

Can soft-close be retrofitted to older furniture?

Yes. For hinges, clip-on dampers can often be fitted onto the hinge arm (provided the manufacturer offers them for that specific concealed cup hinge). For drawers, universal retrofit dampers are available that screw directly to the inside wall of the carcass. The activator catch is screwed to the side of the drawer box and engages the damper during closure.

What runner length do I need?

The nominal length of the runner is determined by the depth of the drawer box, not the internal carcass depth. The runner should always match the drawer depth or be marginally shorter. For a 550 mm deep carcass containing a 500 mm deep drawer, select a 500 mm runner accordingly.
