Anyone planning or upgrading a wardrobe often faces the challenge of making the best use of available space. Especially with units higher than 180 cm, the upper section frequently remains unused or difficult to access in everyday life. In shallow carcase depths, on the other hand, shirts and jackets often get in the way, making it difficult to keep an overview. To adapt wardrobe accessories efficiently to your carcase dimensions, two fundamentally different mechanical solutions are available: the pull-down lift and the front-facing pull-out rail.

What is a wardrobe lift?

A wardrobe lift is a pivoting hardware system designed for the upper interior of furniture units. It consists of a horizontal telescopic rail for hanging clothes, two lateral lever arms, and a central pull rod. Movement is supported by integrated gas struts. Pulling on the central rod swings the entire system downwards, usually locking at a 90-degree angle in front of the carcase.

The automatic return mechanism pushes the system back upwards once released. Depending on the model, load capacity is often 10 kg to 15 kg, depending on the force of the dampers measured in Newtons. The width is telescopically adjustable, for example from 800 mm to 1150 mm, allowing installation in a wide large wardrobe or a 100 cm wide wardrobe.

What is a pull-out clothes rail?

A pull-out clothes rail (technically also called a frontal pull-out) is mounted beneath a fixed shelf or to the wardrobe ceiling. Here, clothes do not hang side by side, but behind one another. Via a guide runner, the entire rail can be pulled forwards out of the wardrobe.

The mechanism is usually based on a ball-bearing slide. Depending on the design, it is either a partial extension (approx. 75 % extension length) or a full extension, allowing the rail to be pulled out fully in front of the wardrobe. Lengths typically vary between 250 mm and 500 mm.

Technical differences in detail

Both systems aim to improve accessibility, but differ fundamentally in their mechanics and space requirements:

  • Direction of movement: The lift operates vertically via a pivoting arc. The pull-out rail operates purely horizontally along a linear axis.
  • Space requirement (depth): The lift requires a standard wardrobe depth of at least 50 cm to 55 cm so that clothes hangers do not scrape against the back panel during swinging. The pull-out rail is the explicit solution for shallow depths (e.g. 35 cm or 40 cm).
  • Installation: The lift is screwed onto the side panels, often utilising the existing line of holes in the System 32 grid. The thickness of the chipboard (strictly 16 mm or 19 mm) is critical here to support the leverage forces. The pull-out rail, by contrast, is screwed vertically upwards underneath a shelf.
  • Load capacity: Thanks to dual-sided fixing and gas dampers, a lift generally bears higher loads. A simple extendable clothes rail usually carries slightly less (approx. 5 kg to 10 kg) depending on the runner construction, as the full weight of the garments strains the front end of the slide when fully extended.

Which system is suitable for your application?

The choice between a lift and a pull-out rail depends primarily on the dimensions of the furniture.

When the wardrobe lift is the right choice: When the wardrobe is very tall but offers a standard depth of 60 cm. With a ceiling height of 2.50 metres and a correspondingly tall solid wood wardrobe, the top half-metre remains wasted without a ladder. The lift eliminates the need for a step stool. Just like a workshop pulley block, the hydraulics reduce the effort needed to lift heavy winter coats.

When the pull-out clothes rail is the right choice: When the wardrobe has a shallow build. A classic scenario is a narrow hallway that only accommodates furniture with a 40 cm depth. Here, clothes hangers (which measure around 45 cm wide) cannot hang perpendicular to the back panel, as the doors – especially on a wardrobe with sliding doors – would not close. Garments hang front-to-back and are pulled out completely into the room for selection.

Can I retrofit a wardrobe lift in any wardrobe? Yes, provided there is sufficient internal width and depth. The side panels must be sturdy enough (at least 16 mm chipboard or MDF). For a corner wardrobe, the door opening angle must also be considered. Hinges should ideally offer a wide opening angle of 155° or 165° so the lift does not catch on the open door when swinging down.

What tools are required for installation? For DIY installation, a cordless screwdriver, a tape measure, a pencil, and a bradawl are sufficient. The fittings are secured using wood screws (usually with a PZ or TX drive, Ø 3.5 mm or 4 mm). For pre-drilling, a wood drill bit with Ø 3 mm is recommended.

What happens if the wardrobe lift is overloaded? The gas spring is designed for a specific maximum load. If this is exceeded, the lift will swing downwards rapidly and uncontrollably when pulled, requiring extreme effort to push back up into the starting position. Over time, the lever arms may bend.
