  2. Cam casing: A cylindrical component made of die-cast zinc, usually with a diameter of 15 mm. An eccentric curved track runs inside. On the top face, there is a cross slot or internal hex socket alongside a crucial marking: a small arrow.

The function relies on tensile force. When the casing is turned, the internal curved track grips beneath the bolt head. Due to the eccentric shape, continuing to turn pulls the bolt further into the casing. This presses the two wooden panels together seamlessly.

Tools Required for Installation

No heavy machinery is needed to install connector fittings properly. Precision and the correct hand tools are what matter most.

  • Manual screwdriver: Essential for locking the casing. Pay attention to the drive profile. A PZ (Pozidriv) size 2 or 3 is usually required, or less commonly a PH (Phillips).
  • Cordless screwdriver: Only for driving the bolts into the wood. The torque must be set to a low level.
  • Rubber mallet: Helpful for gently tapping panels or wooden dowels into position without damaging the edges.

Assembly requires precision. An incorrectly positioned casing will inevitably cause damage to the fitting or the timber.

Step 1: Positioning the Connecting Bolt

Screw the bolt into the face or edge drill hole of the first component. The insertion depth is crucial. The bolt typically features a small collar or stop ring between the thread and the smooth shaft. This collar must sit exactly flush with the wood surface. If it protrudes, a gap will remain between the panels. If driven too deep, the casing will not be able to grip the head.

Step 2: Inserting and Aligning the Cam Casing

Press the casing into the 15 mm cup hole of the second component. Now comes the most critical step: alignment. An arrow is cast into the top face of the casing. This arrow marks the open entry point of the internal curved track. Locking works like a keyhole, where the key must be inserted precisely in the zero position.

The arrow must point directly towards the edge of the panel that contains the edge hole for the bolt. If the arrow points away even by a few millimetres, the internal wall of the casing will block the incoming bolt. Forcing the panels together will deform the die-cast zinc casing or blow out the wood surrounding the hole.

Step 3: Joining the Components

Guide the component with the aligned casing over the bolt. The head of the bolt slides through the edge hole in the timber directly into the open cam casing. Both panels should now sit flush against each other without gaps.

Step 4: Locking the Fitting

Position the matching screwdriver. Turn the casing clockwise. The rotation angle is usually between 180° and 210°. You will feel distinct resistance as the curved track pulls the bolt head in. Turn until the joint is secure. Never use a cordless screwdriver for this step, as the risk of overtightening and snapping the die-cast zinc is too high.

Adjusting Hinges and Fronts

Most cupboard doors are mounted using a concealed cup hinge. The standard diameter for the cup hole in the door is 35 mm. After clipping or screwing the hinge arm onto the cruciform mounting plate inside the carcass, the door gaps must be adjusted.

  • Gap width (side adjustment): The front screw on the hinge arm regulates the door overlay. Turning it moves the door sideways. This ensures the door runs parallel to the outer carcass edge and does not collide with adjacent doors in the centre.
  • Depth (depth adjustment): The rear screw loosens the fixing on the mounting plate (on non-clip models) or controls an eccentric cam (on modern hinges). This sets the distance between the door and the front edge of the carcass. The gap should be around 1.5 mm to 2.0 mm to prevent the door binding against the carcass when opening.

Flaps and Pull-Outs

Furniture such as a sideboard TV unit often uses drop-down or lift-up flaps. A standard hinge alone is not sufficient here. To support the weight of the opening front, a gas strut for heavy flaps is installed. The force rating of these stays is specified in Newtons (N), with common values ranging between 50 N and 150 N. Adjustment is achieved by choosing the correct mounting points specified by the manufacturer.

Internal fittings also require precision once the carcass is built. For instance, if you are fitting a wall unit dish rack inside kitchen cabinetry, the brackets must be aligned perfectly level within the drilled hole rows. On desks, finishing touches often include functional additions, such as inserting a desk cable grommet into the worktop.

Common Installation Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Even experienced fitters can run into issues when working quickly. The following pitfalls are the most frequent when working with connector fittings:

The casing will not turn If the casing cannot be rotated after bringing the panels together, the bolt is not positioned correctly. Either it is not driven deep enough, causing the head to hit the inner wall of the casing, or it is set too deep into the timber, causing the cam track to miss the head entirely. Separate the panels and correct the driving depth of the bolt.

The drive socket strips Die-cast zinc is a relatively soft material. If a screwdriver that is too small is used (e.g. PZ1 instead of PZ2) or applied at an angle, the blade will slip. The drive profile becomes rounded off. If this happens, carefully extract the casing using pliers and fit a replacement.

Gap remains despite tightening If the casing has been turned fully to the stop (approx. 210°) yet a gap remains between the panels, the cause is often an incorrect drilling depth. If the edge hole for the bolt is not deep enough, the bolt bottoms out before the panels meet flush. In this case, drill the hole a few millimetres deeper.

Chipboard breakout If the arrow on the casing is not aligned precisely with the edge hole and the panel is forced onto the bolt, the bolt head levers the casing out of its pocket. Because the casing fits snugly inside the 15 mm hole, this often breaks away the thin surface layer of the chipboard, causing irreparable cosmetic damage to the panel.

Can cam lock connectors be reused? Yes. Because the system functions purely mechanically through tensile force without any glued parts, the joints can be loosened and re-fastened as often as needed. This makes the system ideal for flat-pack furniture during home moves.

Why does the cam casing sit slightly proud of the wood surface? The cup hole for the casing has a specific depth, usually 12 mm or 14 mm, depending on board thickness (e.g. 16 mm or 19 mm). If the casing sits proud, wood chips from drilling often remain at the bottom of the hole. Vacuum the drill hole thoroughly before insertion.

Which tool is better: PZ or PH? This depends on the drive stamped into the fitting. Most European furniture hardware uses the Pozidriv (PZ) profile. This has additional ribs between the cross slots to prevent cam-out. Using a Phillips (PH) screwdriver in a PZ screw under high torque almost always damages the screw head.

How tight should the casing be turned? Tighten the casing hand-tight. As soon as both timber components meet flush and you feel firm resistance, the joint is locked. Over-tightening with brute force will break the casing.
