Uneven cabinet doors are a nightmare for many DIY enthusiasts. Unfortunately, this is also often the case for people who have had cabinets fitted by a joiner. The only thing to do is fix it yourself. But how do you go about it? How do you adjust furniture hinges so that they function smoothly for many years to come?
Incorrectly adjusted furniture hinges – identifying the problem
First of all, it is worth checking the condition of the cabinet and the hinges. There are various types of errors when fitting hinges, which lead to similar yet distinct consequences.
Problems with cabinet hinges can usually be recognised by the fact that the fronts look crooked. If one of the furniture fronts hangs at an angle, or the top edges are not level and overlap instead, this indicates that the hinges have either been chosen incorrectly or fitted poorly. Further symptoms include unevenly hanging fronts and irregular vertical spacing between the doors.
Another consequence of incorrectly fitted cabinet hinges is that issues become noticeable during daily use. It is not uncommon for an open cabinet door to close on its own – either completely or to a certain degree. Aside from unrelated causes such as a very uneven floor surface (which is rare in practice), dropping door fronts are most commonly the result of incorrectly fitted cabinet hinges.
Fitting furniture hinges – required tools
To fit hinges to cabinets, a few basic tools need to be prepared. Much also depends on the type of hinge used. Here, however, we will focus on classic cabinet hinges for residential and office cupboards, which are found in 99% of all such applications – cup hinges. It is worth preparing the following tools:
- Drill
- Drill bits (preferably wood-specific bits or hole cutters)
- Pencil and tape measure
- Screwdriver
- Wood screws
Fitting cup hinges to household cabinets
Concealed cup hinges are by far the most popular option. However, the way they are mounted also depends on the opening angle of the hinge. The most frequently used hinges across various kitchen cabinets and similar units are cup hinges with an angle of 110 degrees. If you are dealing with a corner cabinet, you should opt for hinges with a wider opening angle, such as 170 degrees or 190 degrees.
Cup hinges generally consist of two parts – the hinge arm with cup and the mounting plate. If they have not been assembled at the factory, these components must be joined together before installation.
As with any project, installation begins with taking measurements. Mark the required hinge heights on the cabinet using a pencil. Standard hinge holes should typically be located at a height of about 15 cm from both edges of the doors to ensure overall stability. The distance from the position of the hinge to the cabinet frame is determined by the hinge length. As a rule, this is approx. 4 - 5 cm. Every cabinet differs slightly, so it is best to check and measure carefully yourself (especially if there are drawers inside the cabinet, which must not clash with or be obstructed by the hinges).
The next step is drilling the holes for the cup hinges. The depth of the hole should not exceed 1.5 cm. It is advisable to carry out this step progressively by drilling a shallow hole first and test-fitting the hinge several times. After this step, all that remains is to secure the hinge to the furniture with mounting screws – these should normally be supplied by the manufacturer alongside the mechanism itself.
Attaching hinges to cabinet doors and making adjustments
Mark the cabinet doors at the fixing points in the same manner as when preparing the cabinet carcase. Then offer up the fronts to ensure everything aligns properly. The next step is drilling the mounting holes in the door. Some hinge models are secured solely with screws driven directly into the wood – so it is wise to familiarise yourself with the specific hinge design beforehand.
It is crucial to position the doors so that the centre gap between two doors is no more than 3 mm and no less than 1.5 mm. Otherwise, the cabinet doors will bind when closing. In many cases, timber will move over time, so mounting doors with the absolute minimum clearance is not advisable.
Finally, the cabinet should be adjusted so that the closed fronts sit flush and square against the cabinet carcase. When using cup hinges, two-way adjustment is available – vertically (up and down) and horizontally (side to side). It is always best to follow the manufacturer instructions. Pay close attention to the fixing screws; the degree of tightness directly impacts the movement of the cabinet door. Hinges should never be tightened with excessive force.
Hinge anatomy and adjustment
When starting to adjust hinges, it helps to understand their construction. Every component that makes up the hinge plays an important role. In this case, adjustment simply involves tightening or loosening specific parts of the furniture hinge. The three most essential parts are the mounting plate, the hinge arm, and the adjustment screws. Minor misalignments in the cabinet can usually be rectified by tweaking these screws, as detailed below.
How to adjust cabinet hinges when the door is sagging
If you notice that one or both cabinet fronts are hanging crookedly, adjusting the hinges will likely be necessary. First, examine the position of the door relative to the cabinet carcase and assess how much tilt or sag needs correcting. In most instances, dropping cabinet doors require vertical adjustment. To do this, loosen the mounting screws across all hinge plates on the front. Then tighten them back up gently and gradually. Tighten the hinges slowly in sequence – a few turns on one hinge, a few turns on the next, and so on. Following this procedure will ensure the cabinet door is aligned both aesthetically and functionally.
How to adjust corner cabinet hinges
Corner cabinet hinges are adjusted in the exact same manner as described above. However, doors may occasionally still fail to operate smoothly after adjustment. In such cases, check the type of hinge fitted. It is very common for corner units to be fitted with the incorrect hinges, such as mechanisms with an opening angle that is either too narrow or too wide.
Problems with the gap between cabinet fronts – adjustment method
The width of the gap between cabinet fronts can be adjusted horizontally. To do this, loosen the lateral adjustment screws on the hinge arms and shift the hinges along that axis. Maintain uniform screw depth across the horizontal alignment for all four carcase hinges.
The same technique applies if the reveal between cabinet doors is uneven. The fix once again comes down to adjusting the hinge screws, but this time across the left-to-right plane. If the gap between doors along the horizontal line between hinges is too wide, turn the adjustment screws to bring the doors closer together. If the gap is too narrow, loosen the adjustment screws accordingly.
