Step 1: Determine Positioning Inside the Carcass

The touch latch is ideally fitted on the handle side of the door, opposite the hinges. For very tall or heavy doors, installation at the height of the push point (usually centrally) is recommended. Measure the edge of the carcass. The front edge of the adapter plate is usually set flush or with a defined setback (e.g. 20 mm) from the front edge of the carcass. Mark the drill holes for System 32 or the individual fixing points.

Step 2: Install the Adapter Plate and Mechanism

Pre-drill the holes minimally using a 2 mm wood drill bit to prevent the chipboard from splitting. Secure the adapter plate tightly with the appropriate screws. Ensure the plate sits at an exact 90-degree angle to the front. The cylinder of the touch latch is then clipped or slid onto the plate until it audibly clicks into place.

Step 3: Adjust the Release Travel to the Door Weight (Core Step)

Now perform the fine adjustment of the plunger. Most high-quality touch latches feature an integrated thread on the plunger head.

  1. Basic setting: Turn the plunger clockwise or anti-clockwise to a medium length.
  2. Define the front gap: Close the door. A gap of 2 mm - 3 mm must remain between the door and the carcass. This gap is strictly necessary, as the door must be pushed inwards by this distance to trigger the release mechanism.
  3. Weight compensation: With a heavy MDF or solid timber door, the spring requires more compression travel to build up sufficient kinetic energy to push the front open. In this case, screw the plunger out slightly (anti-clockwise). The plunger becomes longer, the front gap increases minimally, but the spring force acts sooner on the door.
  4. Test the release. After pressing, the door should spring open far enough to allow your fingers to easily reach behind it.

Step 4: Mount the Magnetic Counter Plate

The magnet in the plunger head requires a metallic counterpart on the inside of the door. To find the exact position, use a practical workshop trick: rub the tip of the plunger magnet lightly with a soft pencil or some chalk. Press the door firmly against the plunger. The mark will transfer to the inside of the door. Screw or adhere the counter plate precisely onto this mark. For the screw-on version, a small countersunk screw (3 mm x 12 mm) is usually sufficient.

Step 5: Fine Adjustment of the Hinges

Often, poor release is not caused by the touch latch itself, but by incorrectly adjusted hinges. Use the eccentric screws on the cruciform mounting plate of the hinges. Adjust the reveal so that the door sits parallel to the carcass when closed and does not bind. In a standard full overlay application, the door must sit cleanly over the carcass edge (taking into account the 2 mm gap for the latch).

Special Requirements for Flaps and Pull-Outs

The mechanics change when adjusting horizontal flaps instead of vertical doors. With upward-opening flaps, the front's own weight works heavily against the ejector.

This is where flap fittings come into play. When planning a heavy handleless flap, the touch latch only needs to lift the flap out of the dead centre. A gas strut then takes over the lifting work. The force of these struts is specified in Newtons (N) (e.g. 250 N). The touch latch must be adjusted so that it pushes the flap open far enough for the gas strut to begin its stroke.

With drawers, it is different: here, the mechanism is not installed as a separate pin. Instead, you use push to open drawer runners, where the trigger mechanism and spring are integrated directly into the runner (as full extension or single extension). The front gap adjustment here is usually made via small thumbwheels directly on the underside of the runner.

Common Installation and Adjustment Mistakes

Even with the correct choice of fittings, practical errors can compromise function.

1. Insufficient front gap (door jams) If the door sits flush against the carcass, the plunger has no travel left to be pressed inwards. The mechanism will not click. Solution: Shorten the plunger by screwing it in (clockwise) until the gap of 2 mm - 3 mm is achieved.

2. Incorrect combination of fittings A classic mistake is attempting to combine a push-to-open plunger with a door damper or soft-close hinges. The components will block each other. Keep these systems strictly separate.

3. Offset magnetic counter plate If the plunger and counter plate do not meet squarely, the holding force of the magnet is drastically reduced. The door may pop open on its own or fail to close flush. Repositioning the counter plate is essential. As with any magnetic catch, full surface contact is crucial.

4. Incorrect Hinge Opening Angle

A touch latch only pops the door open by a small gap. When using concealed hinges / cabinet hinges 110 degrees, the door can easily be gripped and opened fully afterwards. With specialised angles, such as concealed hinges / cabinet hinges 165 degrees (wide-angle hinges), ensure the hinge action moves smoothly without resisting the initial impulse of the plunger.

How far should the plunger rotate? Most models offer an adjustment range of +3 mm to -3 mm. Never force the thread beyond its noticeable stop, as this will damage the internal plastic thread.

Why does the door only open 1 cm after pressing? The touch latch is not designed to swing the door fully open. It merely overcomes the dead centre and creates a gap so your fingers can reach behind the front. If the gap is too small, wind the plunger out slightly to increase the spring stroke.
