Preparatory Check: Reveal and Cabinet Geometry
Before starting the actual adjustment at the locking clips, the basic structure of the cabinet must be checked. No adjustment mechanism can compensate for an extremely skewed carcass.
- Measure diagonals: The carcass must be completely square. A diagonal deviation of more than 1.5 mm leads to a distorted gap pattern that can hardly be corrected using the fittings.
- Check drawer box angles: The drawer box itself must also be glued or screwed together squarely.
- Check engagement: Is the drawer seated correctly on the undermount drawer runners? The pin at the rear end of the runner must engage properly in the designated hole (usually 6 mm diameter) in the drawer back panel. At the front, the locking clip must engage audibly with a "click".

Step-by-Step Guide: Adjusting Undermount Drawer Runners
The adjustment mechanisms on undermount runners are located primarily on the front locking clip (catch), which is screwed to the underside of the drawer base and establishes the connection to the runner. The exact position of the levers varies slightly depending on the manufacturer, but the basic principle remains identical.
Step 1: Height Adjustment of the Front
Height adjustment is the most common task. It is used to align the horizontal gap between two drawer fronts or between the drawer front and worktop parallel to each other.
- Pull the drawer out slightly.
- Reach under the front corners of the drawer front. The locking clip is located there.
- Locate the lever or thumbwheel for height adjustment. This component is often colour-coded (e.g. orange, green, or blue).
- Slide or turn the element. On most systems, stepless height adjustment of up to + 3 mm is possible.
- Adjust both sides (left and right) independently until the top gap is completely horizontal.
Note: Downward adjustment (into the negative range) is not possible on many standard locking clips due to space constraints. The front is mounted at the factory on the zero line and can only be raised.
Step 2: Side Adjustment (Gap Alignment)
If the vertical gap between the drawer front and the cabinet side panel (or adjacent door) is narrower at the top than at the bottom, side adjustment must be used.
- On the locking clip, there is another thumbwheel or small slider that moves across the direction of extension.
- Turning it shifts the entire drawer slightly to the left or right on the runner.
- The adjustment range here is typically +/- 1.5 mm.
- Ensure you make the adjustment equally and oppositely on both sides to avoid twisting the drawer on the runners.
Step 3: Depth Adjustment
Depth adjustment is crucial when the front must sit flush with the cabinet side panels (inset front) or when special opening mechanisms are used. With drawer runners push to open, an exact depth setting is mandatory.
- The release trigger path (trigger gap) for mechanical opening systems must be maintained precisely, usually at 2.5 mm to 3 mm.
- If the gap is too narrow, the front catches on the carcass and the mechanism cannot trigger.
- The depth adjustment is located either directly on the front locking clip (as a third thumbwheel) or, on some models, at the rear end of the runner.
- Turn the thumbwheel to move the front up to +/- 2 mm forwards or backwards.
Step 4: Tilt Adjustment (Tilt Function)
With high drawer fronts (e.g. on pan drawers), the top of the front may tilt further away from the carcass than the bottom. This is where tilt adjustment comes into play.
- This adjustment is not made at the front locking clip, but at the rear of the drawer box.
- Pull the drawer out fully. A full extension drawer runner makes accessing the rear mechanisms considerably easier.
- At the back of the drawer box, where the hook of the runner engages, there is a small lever or wheel.
- Adjusting this raises the back panel of the drawer slightly, which tilts the top of the front closer to the carcass.
Common Errors During Installation and Adjustment
Even with high-quality drawer systems, installation mistakes can occur that subsequently make adjustment impossible.
Incorrect screws on the locking clip: If countersunk screws are used when the manufacturer specifies pan-head screws, the locking clip can shift when tightened. The drawer will then sit crookedly on the runner. The screw diameter should be exactly 3.5 mm or 4 mm.
Overloading the runners: If a front sags downwards despite maximum height adjustment, the permissible overall weight has often been exceeded. For wide drawers or heavy materials (solid wood), heavy duty drawer runners with a load capacity of 40 kg or more must be used.
Missing synchronisation on wide drawers: If a drawer with a mechanical opening support pushes unevenly on one side or jams during closure from a width of around 600 mm upwards, the synchronisation rod is usually missing. This connects the left and right runners and ensures parallel release.
Confusing soft-close and push-to-open: A common mistake in furniture making is attempting to combine a soft-close mechanism with a mechanical push catch when the system is not designed for it. Soft close drawer runners gently pull the drawer closed over the last few centimetres. A conventional push-to-open system pushes it open. These two forces work against each other.
Special Considerations Depending on Runner Length
The length of the runners used influences leverage and therefore the gap pattern. Shorter runners such as 350 mm drawer runners are inherently very rigid and rarely sag. For runners with lengths from 600 mm to 800 mm, the leverage of the front weight is multiplied. Here, the tilt adjustment almost always needs readjusting once the drawer is loaded. The adjustment should therefore always be checked and finalised in the fully loaded state.

Why can the height not be adjusted further downwards? Most undermount locking clips are designed so that the zero position is the lowest point. If the front needs to go lower, the runner was mounted too high in the carcass. The drilling position in the carcass (usually in the System 32 grid) must then be moved down by one pitch unit.
The drawer no longer closes completely, why is that? Check whether an object is jammed behind the drawer box. If not, the pin at the back of the runner is not engaging correctly in the drawer back panel. The drawer must be unclipped, removed, and pushed firmly back onto the runners until it audibly clicks.

Can I replace an old undermount runner with a model featuring 3D adjustment?
