Carefully slide the door to the desired height. With slotted plates, this requires some finesse, as the door must be held manually in position. Ensure that all hinges on a door are moved equally to prevent mechanical tension in the material.

Step 5: Tighten and Inspect

Retighten the fixing screws in the slotted holes hand-tight. Do not use a cordless drill, as the thread in the chipboard will strip instantly under excessive torque. Close the door and check the reveal. Repeat the process if necessary until the horizontal line is perfectly flush.

Once the cross mounting plate defines the correct height, the remaining axes on the hinge arm can be fine-tuned.

  • Lateral Adjustment (Gap Width): The front screw on the hinge arm moves the door to the left or right. This adjusts the vertical gap between two doors. The adjustment range is usually `+ 2 mm` to `- 2 mm`.
  • Depth Adjustment (Contact Pressure): The rear screw on the hinge arm (or a cam screw at the rear end) moves the door towards or away from the carcase. This regulates the gap between the inside of the door and the front edge of the carcase. A correct distance of approx. `1.5 mm` is important so the door does not scrape against the carcase edge when opening.

Common Faults in Hinge Installation

Even with correct adjustment of the cross mounting plate, issues can arise if mechanical errors were made beforehand.

Incorrect Overlay Type Selected

A classic error is confusing the hinge types. A full overlay hinge is used when the door fully covers the side panel of the carcase. A half overlay hinge is used when two doors share a central partition wall (dual overlay). An inset hinge is installed when the door sits flush inside the carcase openings. If the door does not fit despite maximum adjustment of the mounting plate, the wrong hinge was very likely chosen.

Stripped Screw Holes in the Chipboard

If the mounting plate screws are overtightened, the thread will no longer grip the wood. The plate loosens under the weight of the door. In this scenario, tightening the screw further does not help. The damaged hole must be drilled out and glued with a wooden dowel. Alternatively, a threaded insert with a metric internal thread (e.g. M4) can be screwed in to give the plate exceptional holding strength once more.

Missing Soft-Close Confused with Other Mechanisms

If a door slams shut loudly, this is not due to the mounting plate adjustment, but rather the absence of a soft-close mechanism inside the hinge cup. Important for planning: an integrated soft-close mechanism must never be combined mechanically with a push-to-open system, as the two mechanisms will work against each other.

Special Considerations in Furniture Construction

The adjustment of hardware varies slightly depending on the application. In a kitchen, fronts often need to form an exact line across multiple cabinets. When planning the height of a kitchen run, bear in mind that uneven floors must first be levelled using cabinet legs before you begin adjusting the hinges. A skewed carcase cannot be compensated for using the cross mounting plate.

For flap doors that open upwards (such as above a wall unit plate rack), special flap hinges are often used in conjunction with a gas strut. The force of these struts is measured in Newtons (N). Here too, the mounting plate must be positioned precisely, or the strut will twist the flap unevenly.
