Cabinet Door Won't Close — Causes and Solutions

An uneven gap pattern or a door that bounces back open is a common installation or wear-and-tear issue. Much like a vehicle suspension, the door mechanism on a furniture carcass requires precise alignment. If the clearances are incorrect or the screws in the chipboard have worked loose, the door will bind against the carcass or the adjacent front panel. Causes: Why the Door No Longer Closes

Before reaching for your tools, you need to identify the exact source of the fault on the fitting. The most common technical causes are:

  • Misaligned axes: Over time, the weight of the door alters the gaps. The door hangs crookedly and rubs against the front edge of the carcass.
  • Stripped screw holes: The chipboard screws holding the cruciform mounting plate have lost their grip in the engineered timber. The hinge gives way under load.
  • Faulty damper: When a soft-close hinge stops working properly, the oil or gas has usually escaped from the internal damper piston. The piston then blocks the closing travel.
  • Internal obstruction: Particularly when a cabinet is built with a shallow depth (for example, a slim shoe cabinet or a bathroom unit), internal shelves often extend to within a few millimetres of the front. A door set only marginally too deep will hit the shelf from the inside.

Check whether the door now closes without catching on the carcass.

2. Correct Lateral Adjustment (Gap Alignment)

If the door hangs crookedly, turn the front adjustment screw on the cup hinge. Turning this screw clockwise moves the door edge towards the centre of the carcass. Turning it anticlockwise moves it outwards. Adjust the upper and lower hinges until the gap between two doors runs completely parallel.

3. Repair Stripped Screws

If the cruciform mounting plate on the carcass interior wall can be moved by hand, adjustment will not help because the screws are spinning freely. Remove the plate entirely. Fill the old pilot holes with wood glue and insert trimmed matches or thin wooden dowels. Once dry, the screws can grip firmly into the material again. Alternatively, specialised metal repair plates can be screwed over the damaged area.

4. Damper Blocking the Closing Travel

If the door can only be closed against heavy mechanical resistance and immediately springs back open, the soft-close mechanism is defective. For clip-on dampers, simply unclip them from the hinge arm. If the soft-close mechanism is built into the hinge cup, it can be deactivated via a small switch on some models.   • Inset: The door does not sit on the edge, but closes flush within the carcass aperture (the hinge arm has a pronounced crank).

Prevention: Minimising Wear on Furniture Hardware

To ensure hinges operate smoothly over the long term, unnecessary loads on the door should be avoided. Do not lean on open doors. For wide or heavy front panels (for example, solid wood), a third hinge should be added centrally for any door height from 900 mm upwards to distribute the tensile loads across the cruciform mounting plates. Furthermore, check the tightness of all screws once a year to prevent screw holes in the chipboard from working loose prematurely.
