- Mark out: Hold the lock housing in the desired position. Ensure absolute parallelism with the door edge. Mark the drill holes with a pencil or a centre punch.
- Pre-drill: To prevent splitting the chipboard or MDF, pre-drill the marked spots. Use a 2 mm wood drill bit. Drill no deeper than 10 mm. A depth stop or a piece of adhesive tape on the drill bit will prevent accidentally drilling through the front panel.
- Secure with screws: Fix the lock using the supplied countersunk screws. Set the torque on the cordless screwdriver to a low setting (e.g. level 3 or 4) to avoid overtightening the screw in the timber material.
- Test operation: Check the function. The lock must engage cleanly. When the front door is moved, the lock housing must not scratch the finish of the rear door (such as on an anthracite or concrete-look wardrobe).
Step 2: Retrofitting Sliding Door Dampers (Soft-Close)
Whilst the lock restricts access, the damper protects against injuries during regular door operation. Installing door dampers on sliding doors requires precision. Like a train pulling smoothly into a platform, the damper absorbs kinetic energy and decelerates the heavy door leaf in a controlled manner until it glides silently into its final position.
For most systems, the door leaves must be unhooked from the wardrobe carcase to install the dampers.
- Unhook the door: Release the anti-lift safety catch on the bottom roller carriage. Swing the door slightly forward and lift it out of the top running track. Lay the door flat on assembly trestles.
- Fit the damper housing into the track: The damper itself is generally slid into the top running track or screwed from underneath into the wardrobe top panel. Measure the distance from the outer side of the wardrobe to the desired stop point. Fix the housing with the appropriate screws. Ensure that the mechanism runs precisely parallel to the track.
- Attach the activator to the door: The activator is the drive pin mounted on the top edge of the sliding door. When closing, it engages with the damper hook. Precisely measure the position of the damper hook inside the carcase and transfer this measurement to the top edge of the door leaf.
- Check alignment: The tolerance for the activator is typically only +/- 1.5 mm. If set too high, it collides with the damper housing. If set too low, it fails to engage with the hook. Fasten the activator securely (do not forget to pre-drill).
- Hang and adjust the doors: Rehang the door into the top running track and secure the bottom rollers. Push the door slowly towards the damper. Watch the moment the activator engages with the damper.
- Fine adjustment: If the door does not finish flush with the side of the carcase, the activator can usually be shifted a few millimetres to the left or right via its slotted holes.
Common Installation Mistakes and Expert Tips
Even with high-grade wardrobe accessories, assembly errors can impair performance.
- Using incorrect screw heads: If round-head screws are used instead of countersunk screws inside the track profile, the heads will protrude into the running channel. The roller carriage will rattle over them or jam entirely.
- Overloading the damper: A damper rated for 15 kg will fail within a few weeks on a large wardrobe with sliding doors and heavy fronts. The plastic catch will snap. Always verify the weight capacity.
- Ignoring the gap size: Fitting a bulky child safety lock to the front door without checking the gap size to the rear door causes the doors to block one another. In such cases, ultra-slim latches or specialised clamp mechanisms must be used.
- Drilling without a depth stop: Especially on thinner front panels (e.g. 16 mm thickness), the drill bit can easily pierce right through the material. A piece of masking tape at 10 mm on the drill bit serves as a reliable visual depth marker.
A child-safe bedroom requires more than just secured wardrobes. In addition to complex sliding door soft-close fittings, simple buffers & dampers can be applied to drawers or standard hinged doors to minimise hard impacts against timber edges.
