Selecting the right timber or sheet board is only half the task; matching your chosen material with the correct shelf supports, brackets, and wall fixings is what prevents unsightly sagging and dangerous failures. Selecting Timber and Sheet Materials
Choosing the best wood for a shelf depends largely on the intended load, your budget, and the desired finish. Different materials offer varying degrees of stiffness, known in joinery as the modulus of elasticity.
- Solid Hardwoods (Oak, Ash, Beech): Outstanding strength and resistance to deflection. Hardwoods allow for longer spans between supports without bending, making them ideal for heavy book collections and display units.
