Dismantling a table leg requires the controlled loosening of mounting flanges and threaded inserts to prevent tearing the wood fibres on the tabletop.
Replacing or repairing table frames is a standard procedure in furniture making and restoration. When old constructions have to make way for new table legs, the biggest challenge lies in preserving the substrate panel. Especially with panels made of chipboard or MDF, old, seized screws or glued screw-in threaded inserts can quickly lead to irreparable tear-out if incorrect force is applied.
This guide is aimed at fitters and experienced tradespeople. It covers the systematic and non-destructive removal of mechanical fixings, from simple mounting plates to complex threaded systems.

Required Tools and Materials
For clean dismantling without damaging the substrate material, precisely fitting tools are essential. A worn bit or the wrong lever tool inevitably leads to damaged screw heads.
- Cordless screwdriver with torque control clutch
- Accurately fitting bits: PZ (Pozidriv) and TX (Torx), typically in sizes PZ2, TX15 or TX20
- Manual screwdriver for sensitive or seized screws

Step-by-Step Dismantling Guide
The procedure varies slightly depending on whether it is a direct screw fixing via a flange or a system with a central threaded rod.
Step 1: Prepare the workspace and position the table
Never work overhead. Gravity makes it harder to control the tool, and falling components can cause injury or damage the floor.
- Clear the table surface completely.
- Place a clean, soft protective mat on the floor.
- Turn the table through 180° so that the tabletop rests flat on the floor with the legs pointing upwards. For heavy solid wood tables, this must be carried out by two people.
Step 2: Detach the table leg from the mounting plate
Many modern metal table legs and steel table legs consist of two components: a mounting plate firmly screwed to the wood, and the actual tube, which is screwed or slotted onto this plate.
- For screw-in systems: Grip the tube with both hands and turn it anticlockwise. If the thread is stuck, tap the tube lightly with the heel of your hand to release the tension in the thread.
- For grub screws: Some models are secured laterally onto a spigot using a small grub screw. Look for a small opening at the upper edge of the tube and loosen the internal hexagon (usually 2 mm or 3 mm) before pulling off the tube.
Step 3: Unscrew flanges and mounting plates
Once the tube has been removed, the mounting plate is exposed. This is generally anchored in the wood using four to six chipboard screws (often in the size 4 x 20 mm or 5 x 25 mm).
- Clean the screw heads. Dust or residue often accumulates here, reducing the grip of the bit.
- Select the exact matching bit. The bit must fit into the screw head like a key in a lock, otherwise you risk stripping the drive. Check whether it is PZ or TX.
- Position the screwdriver or cordless driver completely perpendicular.
- Apply firm downward pressure whilst slowly turning anticlockwise. A low speed prevents slipping.
- Remove all screws and lift off the metal plate.
Step 4: Remove threaded inserts and screw-in nuts (if present)
High-quality tables often do not use direct wood screws, but work with metric screws that engage into a threaded insert or tee nut. If these inserts also need to be removed, utmost caution is required.
- Screw-in threaded inserts: These feature an external thread for wood and an internal thread (e.g. M8) for metal. To wind them out, use the locknut method. Screw a machine screw with two threaded nuts on it into the insert. Lock the two nuts firmly against one another. Now place your spanner on the lower nut and turn anticlockwise. The insert will wind cleanly out of the wood.
- Pronged tee nuts: These usually sit on the opposite side of a through-hole and have small prongs. They can be removed by carefully levering them out with a flat screwdriver or by tapping lightly with a punch from the threaded side.
Step 5: Inspect and prepare the substrate material
After dismantling, drill holes will remain in the panel. Before new connectors & brackets or panel holders are fitted, the wood must be inspected.
If the edges of the holes are frayed or the chipboard core is crumbly, new screws will no longer have any grip. In this case, the old holes must be drilled out, plugged with a wooden dowel and wood glue, and sanded flush. New holes can then be drilled in the exact same position. This is particularly important if you are changing to heavier models such as height-adjustable table legs, where the leverage forces on the fixing points are more dynamic due to the variable length.
Common Dismantling Mistakes and Expert Tips
Even with seemingly simple dismantling tasks, mistakes often creep in that ruin the substrate material.
Using the wrong bit The most frequent mistake is confusing PH (Phillips) and PZ (Pozidriv). A PH bit in a PZ screw has too much play. When attempting to loosen a tight screw, the bit cams out and strips the recess in the screw head. After that, the screw can no longer be removed using standard methods.
Prying instead of unscrewing If a screw spins freely because the thread no longer grips the wood, many people attempt to pry the mounting plate off by force. This leads to large-scale tear-out of the surface layer (especially with melamine-faced panels). Tip: Slide an extremely flat screwdriver or a scraper beneath the plate and apply gentle upward leverage whilst simultaneously turning the screw anticlockwise. This helps the threads catch in the wood again.
Ignoring adhesive bonds Sometimes previous installers secure shelf supports or mounting plates with additional construction adhesive or wood glue to prevent wobbling. If the plate does not come loose after removing the screws, do not force it. Carefully warm the metal plate with a heat gun. The heat transfers to the adhesive and softens it. Then slide a thin scraper blade between the metal and the wood.
FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions about Dismantling
What do I do if the screw head is completely stripped? Use a screw extractor (reverse flute extractor). Drill a centred pilot hole into the damaged screw head using a small metal drill bit. Insert the extractor and turn it anticlockwise. The conical left-hand thread bites into the head and winds the screw out. Alternatively, for protruding heads, you can cut a slot using a rotary tool and use a large flat-head screwdriver.
How do I remove a broken screw from the tabletop? If the shank is stuck in the wood, there are two approaches. If a section protrudes, grip it tightly with locking pliers and wind it out. If the screw has sheared off flush, use a hollow plug cutter to drill out the wood immediately surrounding the screw. The resulting larger hole must then be plugged with a matching cross-grain wooden plug.
Can I reuse the old drill holes for new table legs? This depends on the hole pattern of the new components. If you switch to modern white table legs, for instance, and the hole pattern of the flanges matches exactly, the holes can be reused, provided the thread in the wood is undamaged. To increase grip, you can insert a drop of wood glue and one or two toothpicks into the old drill hole before driving in the new screw.
What torque should I apply when loosening M8 threaded rods? Avoid using impact drivers when dismantling, as with seized threads in timber constructions, they can rip the threaded insert out of the material. Always loosen the connection manually using an open-ended spanner. A firm jolt is usually sufficient to overcome the breakaway torque; thereafter, the thread should turn smoothly.
