Door Dampers & Buffer Pads: What Are They and How Do They Protect Furniture?

A door damper or buffer pad is a mechanical or elastic component that decelerates the closing speed of cabinet doors and drawers to soften the impact. It prevents material damage to the front edge of the carcase, reduces noise levels, and is implemented either as a self-adhesive buffer pad, a drill-in damper, or a clip-on system fitted directly to the hinge.

What exactly is a door damper?

When a cabinet door is closed, kinetic energy is generated. The heavier the front – for instance due to solid wood or a substantial furniture handle – the greater the impact force on the carcase. A damper absorbs this energy and converts it. Much like a shock absorber in a vehicle's suspension, it cushions the movement just before the door meets the wood.

In furniture construction, fitters generally distinguish between two systems: passive stop buffers, which simply prevent direct wood-on-wood contact, and active damping systems, which decelerate the entire closing motion mechanically or hydraulically. Both systems protect not only the edge banding but also delicate components inside the cabinet interior, such as integrated furniture lighting, which could otherwise be damaged by continuous vibrations.

Types and variants

Depending on the construction of the cabinet, different damping methods are used:

  • Elastic buffer pads: These are small, hemispherical or flat pads made of silicone or polyurethane. A clear self-adhesive elastic buffer pad is the simplest solution for cabinet doors. It is stuck directly onto the front edge of the carcase. For dark furniture finishes, a black self-adhesive elastic buffer pad is often chosen. These buffers are also essential as supports for a glass top on a coffee table to prevent slipping and scratches.
  • Drill-in dampers: These mechanical door dampers consist of a cylinder housing a spring-loaded pin. They are drilled directly into the front edge of the carcase side panel and cushion the door via a piston.
  • Screw-on dampers: When the material thickness of the carcase does not allow for end-face drilling, these dampers are screwed into the interior using an adaptor plate with a cross-recess or Torx drive.
  • Hinge dampers: These are clipped directly onto the concealed cup hinge or come integrated into the hinge arm directly from the factory (soft-close).

Dimensions, standards, and typical values

When selecting and fitting dampers, precise measurements must be observed to ensure the door front closes flush:

  • Buffer dimensions: Standard elastic buffer pads have a diameter of 7 mm - 12 mm and a height of 1.5 mm - 3 mm. If the buffer is too thick, an unsightly gap will form between the door and the carcase.
  • Drilling for drill-in dampers: The standard drilling diameter is usually 10 mm (more rarely 5 mm for lightweight fronts). The drilling depth is typically 50 mm.
  • Positioning: Mechanical dampers are fitted on the handle side to counter the leverage effectively. For particularly tall or heavy doors, such as those fitted with a hefty metal furniture knob, installing two dampers (top and bottom) is recommended.

Application & installation

Retrofitting damping systems is straightforward on most cabinets. Self-adhesive buffers require only a grease-free, clean surface (cleaning with isopropanol is recommended).

With screw-on dampers, care must be taken to choose the correct screw length so that screws do not break through to the outside face of the carcase panel. For this purpose, dedicated wood screws and furniture screws with a length of 13 mm to 15 mm and a diameter of 3.5 mm are generally used. If a damper is being clipped onto an existing hinge, compatibility is mandatory – the damper must be made by the same manufacturer and designed specifically for that precise hinge series.
