Artisan Oak is a realistic wood-effect finish for cabinet making, applied as a melamine resin coating onto core boards such as chipboard or MDF. It is characterised by a warm, honey-toned base colour with prominent cracks, dark knots, and often a tactile surface texture that imitates solid oak timber.

What exactly is Artisan Oak?

In professional furniture construction and industrial manufacturing, Artisan Oak does not refer to real solid wood, but rather to a decorative printed paper. This paper is saturated with melamine resin and applied under high pressure and heat onto a core board. The resulting melamine resin coating makes the surface scratch-resistant, moisture-repellent, and lightfast.

A key technical feature of this finish is the so-called synchronised pore structure. This is an embossed tactile texture within the synthetic resin surface that runs exactly parallel to the printed wood grain. Visually and to the touch, Artisan Oak therefore appears significantly more rustic than the paler, more subtle finish of a Sonoma oak chest of drawers, yet it matches the vibrant grain pattern found on a Wotan oak chest of drawers.

Dimensions, Standards, and Processing

When constructing box-type cabinetry from coated boards, certain fixed technical standards apply that fitters and cabinet makers must consider during assembly:

Core Material & Thicknesses: The typical base is chipboard or MDF in standard thicknesses of 16 mm, 19 mm, or 22 mm. The board thickness determines the correct length of screws to be used.
Edge Banding: Raw cut edges of the panels are machine-sealed using ABS edging. This thermoplastic plastic edge is typically 1 mm or 2 mm thick and applied using hot-melt adhesive. Acting as a protective shock absorber, it encloses the raw panel and prevents moisture penetration as well as mechanical damage.
Drill Holes & Fittings: Furniture doors generally require a concealed cup hinge requiring a 35 mm diameter hole drilled into the front panel. For securing mounting plates or drawer runners into the cabinet carcase, chipboard screws (such as 4 x 15 mm or 4 x 17 mm with a PZ or TX drive) are used.
Visual Finish: To conceal exposed screw heads, cam lock connectors, or unused system drill holes inside the cabinet interior, fitters use self-adhesive oak cover caps that are colour-matched precisely to the base tone of the decor.

Combining with Furniture Hardware

The material density of coated core boards provides high pull-out resistance for fixings. When fitting a full-extension runner for drawers, attachment to the cabinet wall is usually achieved via Euro screws fitted into pre-drilled hole patterns. These hole lines adhere to the System 32 standard, where the distance between 5 mm drill holes is precisely 32 mm.

For upward-opening stay flaps, the force rating of the gas strut in Newtons must be precisely matched to the weight of the front panel. Because melamine-coated chipboard panels have a higher specific density than some lightweight natural timbers, wide overhead flaps frequently require dampers rated at 250 N to 350 N.

Application & Selection in Furniture Construction

Artisan Oak is widely utilised in contemporary furniture building for both carcases and front panels. The dynamic, lively brown tone offers the practical benefit of making fine dust particles far less noticeable. In the construction of large-volume storage units, such as an oak wardrobe or a classic oak chest of drawers, the finish delivers a heavy, solid wood look whilst eliminating the natural warping issues of genuine solid timber.

In interior design, this finish is frequently contrasted with dark, plain-coloured elements. Black or anthracite plinth feet, powder-coated metal handles, or dark accent panels highlight an industrial aesthetic. This combination of materials is particularly common in home office furniture like an oak desk or in living room modular units such as an oak wall unit. On wide, low media units, like an oak lowboard, the distinct, continuous grain pattern also stands out effectively across long surfaces both technically and visually.
