A stiff drawer usually results from a mechanical blockage in the drawer runners caused by dirt, loose screws, or overloading beyond the permitted load capacity.

Smooth running of furniture runners relies on exact tolerances down to the millimetre. As soon as these tolerances are exceeded due to external influences or material fatigue, friction increases. This manifests as catching when pulling the drawer out, scraping noises, or a complete blockage of the runner. In most cases, the issue can be resolved with a precise diagnosis and a few simple adjustments to the mechanism.

Causes of Sticking Drawers

Before dismantling any components, the exact cause of the resistance must be identified. The mechanism of drawer runners is susceptible to specific disruptive factors:

  • Loose fixing screws: Runners are usually fixed to the cabinet carcass using chipboard screws (diameter 3.5 mm or 4 mm). If a screw works loose and the screw head protrudes slightly from the countersink, the moving profile of the runner collides with the metal head every time it is pulled.
  • Dirt in the running profile: In a ball bearing runner, small steel balls run within a grease bed inside a cage. Dust, sawdust, or hair binds to this grease. Like sand in an engine, these particles block the rotation of the ball bearings, leading to a gritty, stiff movement.
  • Mechanical overloading: Every runner has a defined load capacity in kilograms (e.g. 30 kg or 45 kg). If this is exceeded, the metal profile deforms slightly. The ball bearings or rollers then jam in the runner.
  • Faulty additional mechanisms: Modern runners often feature convenience functions. A faulty soft-close mechanism (where the damper cylinder loses pressure) can make closing extremely stiff over the final centimetres. Conversely, a jammed push-to-open mechanism (spring-loaded ejection mechanism) often blocks the initial opening. Both are opposing mechanisms that produce different fault symptoms.

Step-by-Step Solution: How to Repair a Drawer

To restore smooth running, the drawer runner must be removed and serviced.

Tools Required

  • Screwdriver (drive PZ2 or TX15, matching the screws used)
  • Dry, lint-free cloth and a small brush
  • Silicone spray or PTFE dry lubricant spray (Teflon)
  • Vernier calliper (if necessary)

1. Removing the Drawer

Removal varies depending on the type of runner. With classic roller drawer runners, pull the drawer out to the stop and then lift it slightly at the front to raise the front roller over the rear roller of the carcass runner. With telescopic ball bearing runners, there is usually a small plastic lever inside the runner profile on the side. This must be pressed up on one side and down on the other to release the transport lock and pull the drawer out completely.

2. Visual Inspection and Cleaning

Inspect the inside of the carcass runners with a torch. Remove coarse dirt with a brush. Then wipe the running tracks of the profiles thoroughly with a dry cloth.

3. Checking the Screws

Run your finger over the fixing screws on the carcass runner and on the drawer side. Every screw head must sit completely flush within the countersunk metal. Tighten loose screws hand-tight with the appropriate screwdriver. Do not overtighten the screws, as this will strip the thread in the chipboard.

4. Lubricating the Mechanism

Apply a suitable lubricant. For ball bearing runners, use a PTFE spray. It leaves a dry lubricating film that will not attract new dust. Spray the product sparingly directly onto the ball cage and move the profile back and forth several times to distribute it.

5. Reinstallation and Function Test

Place the drawer back into the runners completely horizontally. Push the drawer backwards with even pressure until the mechanism audibly clicks into place (on ball bearing runners). Check the movement.

When Is a Replacement Necessary?

If the drawer can still only be moved with force after cleaning and adjustment, there is an irreparable mechanical defect. Replacing the fittings is essential if:

  • Steel ball bearings have fallen out of the cage.
  • The plastic rollers of a roller runner show cracks or have flattened on one side.
  • The metal profile of the runner is visibly bent (often due to lateral force or severe overloading).

Choosing the Right Replacement Fitting

When replacing runners, the dimensions must match exactly. The nominal length of drawer runners in furniture construction typically ranges from 250 mm - 800 mm, usually in 50 mm increments. Measure the closed runner when removed to determine the correct size (e.g. 450 mm).

A defect is often a good opportunity for a technical upgrade. If the old drawer only extended about 75 per cent out of the carcass, it was a single-extension runner. By upgrading to full extension drawer runners, the drawer can now be pulled out 100 per cent, making access to the rear section significantly easier.

Also pay attention to weight ratings. For wide kitchen drawers storing pots or crockery, standard runners (usually up to 25 kg or 30 kg) are often insufficient. Here, using heavy duty drawer runners with a load capacity of 45 kg or more is advisable. If you wish to improve closing comfort, choose soft close drawer runners. These absorb the momentum of the drawer and pull it shut softly and silently over the last few millimetres. For handleless furniture fronts, push to open drawer runners are the technically correct choice.

Prevention: Keeping Runners Moving Smoothly Long Term

To prevent new or freshly serviced runners from sticking again, a few basic rules should be followed. Weight distribution inside the drawer is essential. Heavy items should be placed as far back as possible to minimise leverage on the front rollers or ball bearings when the drawer is open.

Furthermore, shifting contents often cause items to spill over the back panel of the drawer and block the mechanism from the inside. Inserting a made-to-measure drawer anti-slip mat prevents cutlery trays, tools, or storage containers from sliding backwards during rapid opening and closing.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I lubricate sticking drawer runners with penetrating oil (e.g. WD-40)? No. Standard penetrating oil or household oil is unsuitable for this application. It gums up over time and attracts dust and dirt. This creates a thick paste that will eventually block the runner completely. Use only silicone spray or PTFE dry lubricant spray.

Why does the drawer stick only on the very last centimetres when closing? This issue occurs on runners fitted with soft-close. The small pneumatic or hydraulic damper cylinder at the end of the runner has lost pressure, or the catch pin has broken. The damper no longer cushions the drawer smoothly, acting instead as a hard mechanical resistance. In this case, the complete runner usually needs to be replaced.

Can I simply replace a roller runner with an undermount runner? No, this is not possible without extensive joinery work. A roller runner is screwed to the side of the drawer and typically requires 12.5 mm to 13 mm of installation width. An undermount runner sits concealed beneath the drawer base. The wooden construction of the drawer (thickness of side panels, position of the base) is fundamentally different between the two systems. If you wish to switch runner types entirely, you will often need to opt for complete new drawer systems (including metal drawer sides).
