During the dynamic opening and closing of a drawer, centrifugal forces act upon the stored items. Melamine-coated drawer bottoms offer virtually zero frictional resistance. Without a dampening mat or separating dividers, the centre of gravity shifts abruptly.

Much like a poorly loaded lorry negotiating a bend, the shifting weight exerts point loads against the side walls of the drawer box. These peak forces transfer directly to the side-mounted ball bearing runner or the concealed undermount runner. Over time, the plastic or metal ball cages become deformed, the synchronisation rod can twist, and the running action of the drawer becomes uneven. In the worst case, the drawer front rubs against the cabinet carcass below.

The geometry of Nolte kitchens is based on standardised grid dimensions. The nominal length of the runners is frequently 500 mm. However, the exact internal dimension of the drawer differs, as the thickness of the drawer sides and the rear panel must be deducted.

Step 1: Accurately Measure the Internal Dimensions

Measure the width and depth at the drawer base in mm. Always measure at the level of the base, as some drawer sides taper slightly outwards towards the top. Note down the clear internal dimensions. Subtract a 2 mm tolerance from both the width and depth so the mats do not buckle later on.

Step 2: Cut the Non-Slip Mat

Unroll the non-slip drawer mat on a cut-resistant surface. Transfer the measured dimensions. Align the steel ruler and cut the mat with the utility knife in a single continuous stroke. The textured side faces upwards, whilst the smooth side adheres securely to the melamine base of the drawer.

Step 3: Position the Organiser

Now insert the kitchen drawer organiser. For cutlery drawers, a full-coverage insert is recommended. For deep pan drawers or grocery storage, use modular dividers fitted lengthwise or crosswise. To maximise the lifespan of your drawer mechanisms, weight distribution is paramount. Stacks of heavy plates and cookware should always be placed in the lowest pull-outs. This lowers the centre of gravity of the entire kitchen cabinet and prevents tipping if the unit is not properly anchored to the wall.

Take particular care with retrofitted pull-outs in tall larder units.
