Essential Hardware for Making DIY Cabinets

When learning how to make cabinets from scratch, selecting timber sheet materials is only half the battle. The long-term durability, alignment, and functionality of any carcass rely entirely on the quality and suitability of the hardware inside. Whether you are constructing a simple utility unit or a full kitchen run, having the correct fittings prepared before assembly will save hours of frustration and prevent costly mistakes.

Sturdy Carcass Assembly and Connectors

A rigid carcass forms the foundation of every cabinet. While traditional woodworking joints work well, modern cabinetmaking typically relies on purpose-made mechanical fasteners for speed and structural strength.

  • Confirmat screws: Thick-shanked steel screws specifically designed for MDF and chipboard. They require a stepped pilot hole but create exceptionally rigid right-angle joints.
  • Cam and dowel fittings: The standard choice for knock-down construction. They allow flat-pack assembly with completely hidden fixings on the outer faces.
  • Corner braces and assembly blocks: Ideal for securing reinforcing rails and fixing the top of the cabinet to a worktop or adjacent structure.

Concealed Hinges and Mounting Plates

Most modern cabinets use European-style concealed cup hinges. For standard timber and board materials, the industry-standard 35 mm cup hole is drilled into the back of the door, set slightly back from the edge.

When deciding on hinges, consider the door configuration:

  • Full overlay: The door covers the full thickness of the carcass edge, standard for standalone units.
  • Half overlay: Used on central partitions where two doors share a single carcass upright.
  • Inset: The door sits entirely flush inside the carcass frame, requiring specialised inset hinges.
  • Integrated soft-close: Hydraulic dampeners built into the hinge arm prevent slamming and prolong the life of the joinery.

Selecting Drawer Runners

Drawers carry significant weight and require robust mechanical support. If you are learning how to make cabinets for kitchens or workshops, choosing the right slide mechanism makes a substantial difference to everyday use.

  • Roller runners: Simple, cost-effective bottom-mount slides with nylon wheels. Best suited for light-duty domestic applications.
  • Ball-bearing slides: Side-mounted runners offering high load ratings and full extension, allowing complete access to the back of the drawer box.
  • Under-mount runners: Concealed beneath the drawer base for a seamless, high-end look, frequently paired with soft-close or push-to-open mechanisms.

Adjustable Legs and Base Fixings

Floors are rarely level, particularly in older British homes. Rather than resting the timber carcass directly on the subfloor, using adjustable plastic plinth feet simplifies installation significantly.

These legs screw into the base of the carcass and can be adjusted with a spanner to achieve a perfectly level unit. Clip-on plinth brackets can then be fastened to a timber kickboard, snapping directly onto the legs for a clean, professional finish that keeps the carcass safe from floor moisture.

Internal Shelf Supports and Plugs

Adjustable shelving allows your storage to adapt over time. The most reliable method is drilling paired 5 mm holes at 32 mm centres along the inside walls of the carcass.

  • Plug-in shelf studs: Metal or plastic pins that push directly into 5 mm pre-drilled holes.
  • Spoon or bracket supports: Provide a wider flat surface area to stop heavy shelves from tipping.
  • Cover caps: Push-fit plastic plugs used to conceal visible screw heads and unused shelf holes, giving the interior a neat, tailored look.
