Even the highest quality timber or laminate surface will quickly warp, crack, or shift if it is not secured properly to the supporting base units. Understanding the primary worktop fittings available and how they function ensures a seamless finish that accommodates natural timber movement and withstands everyday kitchen use.
Joining Surfaces with Worktop Connector Bolts
When running worktops along an L-shaped or U-shaped kitchen layout, joining two lengths together securely is the first critical task. Worktop connector bolts (often referred to in the trade as dog-bone bolts) draw the two worktop pieces tightly together to create an almost invisible seam.
- Routing the Recesses: Standard worktop jigs allow you to route matching female cut-outs and bolt channels on the underside of both worktop sections, usually 20 mm deep depending on the material thickness.
- Sealing the Joint: Always apply a waterproof sealant or specialised colour-matched jointing compound along the mating edges before tightening the hardware to prevent water ingress from swelling the core board.

Solid wood worktops expand and contract across their grain as ambient moisture levels fluctuate between seasons. Using rigid fixings can split the timber. Slotted angle brackets—often called stretcher plates—feature an elongated slot perpendicular to the grain direction.
