For a clean, tear-out-free installation in engineered wood materials such as chipboard or MDF, the following equipment is required:

  • Furniture castors with a top plate (ideally two swivel castors with brakes for the front, two swivel or fixed castors for the rear).
  • Cordless drill/driver with torque preselection.
  • Wood drill bit (Ø `2,5 mm` or `3 mm`) with a depth stop.

The conical head of a countersunk screw forces the metal of the plate apart when tightened and reduces the contact area. Step-by-Step Guide: Fitting Furniture Castors

The following guide assumes a standard carcase furniture piece with a base panel made of coated engineered wood.

Step 1: Preparation and Carcase Protection

Empty the furniture completely. Remove loose shelves, drawers, and doors to reduce weight and prevent hinges from swinging open. Line the floor with a clean blanket. Carefully tilt the carcase onto its back or top. For delicate finishes, such as high-gloss sideboards or matt black sideboards, an entirely clean workspace is mandatory to avoid scratching the surface finish.

Step 2: Positioning the Mounting Plates

The placement of the castors affects tipping stability. Fit the castors as close to the outer edge as possible, but with sufficient distance from the perimeter. The swivel ring of a swivel castor needs clearance. The wheel must be able to rotate 360° without protruding beyond the outer edge of the furniture or rubbing against any existing plinth.

Measure the interference circle (the maximum swivel radius of the castor) and add a safety buffer of `5 mm`. Mark the position of the mounting plate in the four corners of the furniture base. For wide carcases (from approx. `100 cm` to `110 cm` wide), fitting a fifth castor centrally beneath the base panel is advisable to prevent sagging.

Step 3: Marking and Punching Pilot Holes

Place the castor in the marked position. Use a bradawl or awl to mark the centres of the usually four fixing holes of the mounting plate precisely into the chipboard. This indentation guides the drill bit in the next step and prevents it from slipping on the smooth melamine coating.

Step 4: Pre-drilling (Strictly Necessary)

Driving screws directly into chipboard or MDF risks splitting the material. The screw displaces material; without pre-drilling, enormous lateral pressure builds up. Like an anchor in masonry, the screw thread needs clean material in the board to take tensile loads without bursting the substrate.

  • Measure the length of the screw that protrudes from the mounting plate.
  • Set the depth stop on the drill bit so that you drill exactly `2 mm` less than the depth the screw penetrates into the wood. For a `15 mm` screw, drill `13 mm` deep.
  • For a `4 mm` screw, use a `2,5 mm` or `3 mm` wood drill bit.
  • Drill strictly vertically (at a 90° angle).

Step 5: Screwing Down the Castors

Position the castor. Use the cordless drill/driver with the matching bit. Set the clutch torque to a low level (e.g. level 3 or 4) to prevent overtightening the screw. If a screw strips in chipboard, the thread is destroyed and the screw loses all holding force. Ideally, tighten the screws in a crosswise pattern so the mounting plate does not tilt. The screw heads must sit flush against the metal plate.

Step 6: Function Check

Stand the furniture back on its feet or castors. Check whether all four (or five) castors make floor contact. Engage the brake on the front castors and test whether the furniture piece stands securely. For media units such as TV base units or TV sideboards, an absolutely level alignment is vital. Use a spirit level for the final inspection.

Common Installation Mistakes

  1. Incorrect castor material: The tread of the castor must match the flooring. Hard floors (laminate, parquet, tiles) require soft castors (often made of polyurethane or with rubber coating). Soft floors (carpet) require hard castors (mostly made of polyamide). Incorrect castors cause floor scratches or jam.
  2. Screws that are too long: If the material thickness of the base is ignored, the screw tips will pierce the inside of the furniture. With a standard base panel of `16 mm` or `18 mm`, the screw including the plate thickness must not exceed `15 mm` or `17 mm` in length.
  3. Missing brakes: If only unbraked castors are fitted, the furniture moves forward when opening doors or pull-outs. Always fit at least two castors with brakes, preferably at the accessible front edge.
  4. Underestimating weight: For furniture primarily used to store heavy items (e.g. crockery in chests of drawers and sideboards), only the empty weight is often calculated. A furniture piece `80 cm` wide and `35 cm` deep can easily double its weight when fully loaded.

It consists of the wheel diameter plus the castor fork and the mounting plate. Typical overall heights range between `40 mm` and `100 mm`.

Can castors also be fitted to furniture with a plinth? Yes, provided the depth behind the plinth is sufficient. The plinth may need to be trimmed by a few millimetres so it does not drag along the floor when moved. The castors are then fitted concealed behind the plinth.

Should I use swivel castors or fixed castors? For maximum manoeuvrability in tight spaces (e.g. in narrow hallways), four swivel castors are ideal. What can be done if a screw strips in chipboard? If the drill hole is stripped, the screw will no longer hold. Alternatively, if space permits, a threaded insert with a metric internal thread (e.g. M4) can be installed to accept a metric machine screw.
