  2. Drill the holes. For concrete, use a hammer drill. For brick or aerated concrete, an impact drill is sufficient.
  3. The drill hole depth must equal the plug length plus 10 mm. Vacuum the drill hole afterwards, as remaining dust reduces plug friction and consequently the system's holding force.
  4. Tap the wall plug in until it is flush with the wall surface.

Step 6: Final Securing

Slide the unit back into position until the brackets line up exactly over the wall plugs. Insert the long wall screws through the bracket into the wall plug and tighten them securely by hand. Finally, check stability by applying light pulling force to the front top edge of the carcass. The unit must no longer tilt forward.

Avoiding Common Mistakes During Wall Anchoring

Even with seemingly straightforward installations, technical errors often compromise the safety of the setup.

  • Incorrect screw length in the carcass: Driving a 20 mm screw into a 16 mm thick top panel will break through the coated surface. This damages the appearance of a high-gloss white 4-drawer chest and weakens the structural integrity.
  • Using countersunk screws with flat brackets: If the steel bracket does not feature a countersink (chamfer) on the hole, the countersunk head will not sit flat. This leads to point loading and, in the worst case, the screw head shearing off. Always use pan-head or round-head screws for flat, non-countersunk holes.

  • Securing to the back panel instead of the carcass: Thin back panels (usually 3 mm HDF) are typically only pinned or slotted into a groove. A bracket attached only to this back panel will tear out immediately under load. Anchoring must always be into solid structural components (side panels or top panel).

FAQ: Wall Anchoring for Cabinet Furniture

Does every chest of drawers strictly need anchoring to the wall? From an engineering perspective, it depends heavily on geometry and weight. A low, deep bedside chest of drawers has a very low centre of gravity and rarely tilts. However, as soon as a unit is taller than 750 mm or has heavy pull-outs, wall anchoring is strongly advised.

How do I bridge a large gap to the wall caused by thick pipes or skirting boards? If the gap exceeds 30 mm, a standard bracket is insufficient.
