Fitting a Furniture Lock — Step-by-Step Guide

A furniture lock secures drawers, cupboard doors, or flaps against unauthorised access, with the backset – the distance from the centre of the cylinder to the edge of the lock – representing the most crucial measurement for exact positioning.

Retrofitting or replacing a lock on furniture made of chipboard, MDF, or solid wood is a standard task in furniture building and interior fitting. The process does not require a specialist workshop, but it does demand absolute precision when marking out and drilling. The hole for the lock cylinder forgives no mistakes – it must sit perfectly, like a precise cut made with a panel saw.

This guide focuses on fitting a classic surface-mounted rim lock with a cylinder. This design is screwed onto the inside of the furniture front, while the cylinder passes through a drilled hole to the outside.

  • Wood drill bit (2 mm or 2.5 mm) for pre-drilling the fixing screws

  • Pencil or bradawl

  • Backing board (a scrap piece of wood) and a G-clamp
  • Chipboard screws (usually 3.5 x 15 mm for a standard front thickness of 18 mm)

Step-by-Step Guide: Fitting a Furniture Lock

The following guide describes installation on a classic hinged door. The steps can be applied in the same way to drawers.

1. Determine Position and Mark the Backset

The backset is the decisive dimension for any furniture lock. It defines the distance from the door edge (locking side) to the centre of the cylinder. Typical backsets are 15 mm, 20 mm, 25 mm, or 30 mm.

  1. Determine the height at which the lock is to be mounted. On doors, this is often in the centre or in the upper third.
  2. Mark this height on the inside of the door.
  3. Measure the exact backset inwards from the door edge and mark a cross.
  4. Use the try square to transfer the height mark to the outside of the door. Measure the backset here as well and mark the drilling centre point.

Note: Ensure that the lock bolt extends far enough past the carcass edge when locked to guarantee a secure hold in the striking plate.

2. Drill the Cylinder Hole

Drilling through coated board materials always carries the risk of breakout on the exit side. Proceed here with utmost care.

  1. Clamp the backing board firmly to the inside of the door using the G-clamp, positioned directly behind the marked drilling point. The board provides counter-pressure and prevents the coating from chipping away.
  2. Place the Forstner bit on the outside of the door exactly on the mark.
  3. Drill straight through the material at high speed but with low feed pressure, until you cut slightly into the backing board.

Alternative drilling method (without a backing board): Drill from the outside only until the centring tip of the drill bit just becomes noticeable as a tiny hole on the inside. Then insert the drill bit from the inside into this small hole and drill the rest. This creates completely clean edges on both sides.

3. Screw the Lock Body into Place

Once the opening for the cylinder has been created, the lock is fixed on the inside.

  1. Insert the lock through the drilled hole from the inside. The cylinder should now sit flush with the outside or protrude slightly.
  2. Align the lock body perfectly parallel to the door edge using the try square. A crookedly fitted lock inevitably leads to problems when closing.
  3. Mark the fixing holes of the casing using a bradawl.
  4. Pre-drill the holes with a 2 mm wood drill bit approx. 10 mm deep. This prevents the substrate material from splitting. Take strict care not to drill right through the front.
  5. Screw the lock firmly into place by hand using suitable chipboard screws. Use a manual screwdriver for this to avoid stripping the threads in the wood.

4. Attach the Rosette

On the outside, the decorative rosette collar is now pushed or pressed onto the protruding cylinder. It conceals any minor imperfections from drilling and provides a neat finish. Depending on the model, the rosette is simply pressed on or secured from the side with a tiny grub screw.

5. Position and Fit the Striking Plate

The striking plate (or strike bracket) is the counterpart on the cabinet carcass that the lock bolt engages with when locked.

  1. Close the furniture door almost completely.
  2. Turn the key so that the bolt extends.
  3. Transfer the top and bottom edges of the bolt onto the inside of the carcass with a fine pencil line (or onto the shelf, depending on the locking direction).
  4. Measure the distance from the bolt to the inside face of the door to determine the exact depth for the striking plate.
  5. Position the striking plate on the carcass according to your marks.
  6. Mark the screw holes with a bradawl and screw the plate into place. Pre-drilling is essential in hardwood or high-density MDF.

6. Function Test and Fine Adjustment

Close the door and operate the lock. The key must turn smoothly. If the mechanism catches, the bolt is rubbing against the striking plate.

In this case, slightly loosen the screws on the striking plate and move it by a few millimetres in the required direction. Many striking plates feature slotted holes that allow precise adjustment in height or depth. Tightening the screws again secures the system perfectly.

  • Jammed bolt: If door hinges are not properly adjusted, the gap alignment changes. This prevents the bolt from meeting the striking plate accurately. Always adjust the hinges correctly before installing the lock.

How do I find the correct drill bit diameter for my furniture lock? Measure the outer diameter of the cylinder with a calliper. The most common diameters in furniture construction are 19 mm. Use a drill bit that matches this measurement exactly, or at most 1 mm larger. An oversized hole will cause the cylinder to wobble.

Can I fit a lock to a very thin furniture front? For front thicknesses under 16 mm, mounting a classic surface-mounted lock becomes difficult because screws cannot bite deeply enough without breaking through the front.
