Fitting Kitchen Drawers: Hardware and Installation Guide

Upgrading or repairing kitchen storage often comes down to the quality and alignment of internal hardware. Wobbly boxes, sticking slides, and uneven gaps between drawer fronts are almost always caused by worn-out components or incorrect mounting. When fitting kitchen drawers, choosing the correct runner mechanism and taking accurate measurements ensures smooth, quiet operation that stands up to daily household use.

Choosing the Right Drawer Runner Mechanisms

Before beginning an installation or replacement project, you must identify the style of runner that suits your cabinet construction and load requirements. The three main options available in modern joinery are:

  • Roller runners (bottom-mount): Common in standard and budget cabinetry. These rely on nylon wheels running along powder-coated steel tracks. They are simple to fit but generally offer only partial extension.
  • Ball-bearing slides (side-mount): Sturdy metal tracks containing steel balls. They provide high load capacities, smooth travel, and are available in full-extension variants, giving complete access to the back of the drawer.
  • Undermount concealed runners: Fitted beneath the drawer box, hiding the hardware entirely. They typically incorporate integrated soft-close or push-to-open mechanisms and require precise drawer box dimensions.

Key Measurements Before Installation

Accurate measuring is the single most critical step in fitting kitchen drawers. To avoid binding or excessive play, check the following dimensions carefully:

  • Internal cabinet depth: Measure from the front edge of the cabinet carcass to the inside face of the back panel. The runner length must not exceed this depth.
  • Drawer side clearance: Standard side-mounted ball-bearing runners usually require 12.7 mm (1/2 inch) of clearance on each side between the drawer box and the cabinet wall. Always verify the manufacturer's specific gap allowance.
  • System 32 hole spacing: Most modern flat-pack and modular kitchen carcasses feature pre-drilled 32 mm spaced line-boring holes (5 mm diameter). Matching your runner brackets to these holes saves significant measuring time and guarantees level alignment.

Step-by-Step Guide to Fitting Kitchen Drawers

Whether you are retrofitting existing cabinets or building new units, follow these steps for a professional finish:

1. Prepare the Carcass and Mark Heights

Remove existing hardware and clean the internal cabinet panels. Using a spirit level and a combination square, mark horizontal reference lines on both internal side panels. If your cabinet features standard 32 mm hole patterns, locate the corresponding holes at equal heights on the left and right walls.

2. Mount the Cabinet Runners

Separate the drawer member from the carcass member on each runner (usually done by pressing a plastic release lever). Position the carcass tracks inside the unit, aligning them with your reference lines or pre-drilled holes. Ensure the front edge of the runner sits flush or slightly recessed from the front edge of the cabinet side panel. Secure the tracks using appropriate wood screws or Euro screws.

3. Fix the Box Profiles and Test Operation

Mount the remaining runner profiles to the base or sides of the drawer box, ensuring they are parallel and square to the box front. Slide the drawer box into the carcass tracks until you hear the locking clips engage. Gently push the drawer in and pull it out to test for smooth movement. If the drawer binds or catches, check whether the side clearances are uniform from front to back.

Aligning Drawer Fronts and Final Adjustments

Once the drawer box operates freely, you can attach the decorative drawer front. Use double-sided tape or temporary clamping to position the front with uniform gaps around all edges before driving permanent screws from the inside of the drawer box. Quality kitchen drawer fittings often include built-in cam adjusters or slotted mounting brackets, allowing you to fine-tune the height, tilt, and lateral position of the front panel for a seamless finish across the entire cabinet run.
