Guide to Drawer Fixings: How to Repair Loose and Sagging Drawers

A loose or sagging drawer is one of the most common issues in household cabinetry. Over time, constant opening and closing, combined with heavy loads, puts significant strain on the hardware holding the drawer box together and securing it to the carcass. Fortunately, fixing drawers does not require replacing the entire piece of furniture. By identifying the root cause and choosing the correct drawer fixings, you can restore smooth, reliable operation in an afternoon.

Identifying Common Drawer Problems

Before sourcing replacement components, inspect the drawer to determine why it is failing. The issue generally falls into one of three categories:

  • Loose drawer fronts: Modern flat-pack furniture often uses cam locks or specialised drawer fixing brackets to hold the front panel to the sides. If these brackets crack or the screws strip, the front wobbles or detaches entirely.
  • Sagging drawer bottoms: Thin hardboard or MDF bases frequently slip out of their side grooves under heavy loads, bowing downwards and catching on the carcass below.
  • Wobbly or jamming runners: Loose screws along the internal cabinet sides allow the runners to shift out of alignment, causing the drawer to stick or drop off its track.

Choosing the Right Drawer Fixings and Hardware

Restoring stability depends on matching the right hardware to the specific point of failure. Using standard wood screws where specialised fittings are required often leads to repeated failures.

Drawer Front Fixings

Drawer front brackets screw directly into the internal sides of the drawer box and anchor into pre-drilled holes in the decorative front panel. Many systems allow slight vertical and horizontal adjustment, making it simple to align drawer fronts cleanly across a bank of cabinets.

Drawer Bottom Supports

To repair or reinforce a bowed drawer base, plastic or metal drawer repair brackets provide a rigid mechanical brace. These small wedge-shaped brackets screw directly underneath the base into both the bottom panel and the drawer sides, pulling the base back into position without dismantling the entire box.

Runner Mounting Screws

When securing runners to chipboard carcasses, standard pointed wood screws can easily strip the timber core. Instead, use flat-headed Euro screws (typically 5 mm or 6.3 mm diameter) or specialised carcass screws that provide superior grip in pre-drilled 5 mm system holes.

Step-by-Step Guide to Fixing Drawer Components

  1. Remove and inspect: Fully extend the drawer and release the safety catches on the runners to lift the box out of the carcass. Place it upside down on a flat, protected work surface.
  2. Reinforce stripped screw holes: If fixing drawer runners into loose chipboard, fill the blown-out holes using wooden dowels with PVA wood glue, or insert nylon screw expansion plugs to create a fresh anchor point.
  3. Tighten or replace brackets: Check the drawer fixing brackets at the front corners. Replace any cracked plastic fittings with durable steel brackets, ensuring all screws sit flush.
  4. Support the base: Install bottom support wedges along the underside seam between the baseboard and the sides. Space them evenly to distribute weight across the bottom panel.
  5. Realign the runners: Check that both left and right runners are completely level and set back at an equal distance from the front edge of the carcass. Reattach the runners firmly using appropriately sized screws.

Preventative Maintenance Tips

To prevent future issues with drawer fixings, avoid overloading deep pan drawers beyond their rated runner capacity. Periodically check that fixing screws along the internal cabinet walls remain tight, as vibration from daily use can gradually work them loose. Wiping dust and debris out of the runner tracks also reduces mechanical drag, protecting the fixings from unnecessary strain.
