Cabinet Hinges and Mounting Plates

Concealed cup hinges are the backbone of modern kitchen cabinetry. Standard installations typically require a 35 mm diameter cup hole drilled into the back of the door, set back around 4 mm to 5 mm from the edge. Choosing the right hinge depends on how the door sits relative to the carcase edge:

• Full Overlay: The door completely covers the front edge of the cabinet side panel. This is the most common setup in standard modular kitchens.
• Half Overlay: Two doors share a single central dividing panel, with each door covering half the timber edge.
• Inset: The door sits entirely flush inside the carcase opening, requiring a specific cranked hinge arm.

Modern hinges often incorporate integrated soft-close dampers or clip-on mechanisms that allow you to remove and refit doors without unscrewing the base plate. Three-way adjustment screws enable precise alignment for horizontal, vertical, and depth positioning, ensuring uniform gaps between adjacent doors.

Drawer Runners and Extension Systems

Drawers endure significant daily strain, particularly in base units loaded with heavy cookware, crockery, and small appliances. Upgrading to the correct drawer runner transforms both usability and longevity:

• Roller Runners: Bottom-mounted and economical, offering partial extension. Suitable for lightweight utility drawers.
• Ball Bearing Slides: Side-mounted runners that handle medium to heavy loads. Full-extension variants allow complete access to the back of the drawer box.
• Undermount Soft-Close Runners: Concealed beneath the drawer base, providing a sleek appearance, smooth travel, and quiet closing action.

When selecting runners, check the internal depth of your cabinet carcase and account for the required weight capacity, especially for wide pan drawers which often demand runners rated for 30 kg to 50 kg.

Base Unit Legs and Carcase Fixings

Kitchen base units require a solid, level foundation to support heavy worktops made of quartz, granite, or solid timber. Adjustable plastic plinth legs are the industry standard for leveling units on uneven screed or floorboards:

• Adjustable Height: Most standard legs allow fine-tuning between 100 mm and 150 mm, providing clearance for plumbing and cables beneath the carcase.
• Plinth Clips: Simple plastic or metal clips secure kickboards directly to the legs, keeping them upright while remaining easy to remove for maintenance access.
• Connecting Bolts and Brackets: Steel connecting screws (often M4 or sleeve bolts) tie neighbouring carcases together rigidly, while heavy-duty corner brackets secure the entire run to the wall.

Handles, Knobs, and Push-to-Open Catches

Opening hardware combines practicality with aesthetics. When replacing handles, measure the exact centre-to-centre distance (hole centres) between the fixing screws. Common European standard drill spacings follow the 32 mm system, with hole centres typically at 96 mm, 128 mm, 160 mm, or 192 mm. For handleless modern designs, mechanical push-to-open catches and magnetic latches provide a reliable release mechanism with a light push on the door or drawer front.

Internal Storage Fittings and Cable Management

Maximising usable space within standard carcases often comes down to choosing the right internal fittings. Corner carousels, pull-out wire larder units, and under-sink organisers turn awkward dead zones into accessible storage. For kitchen islands and breakfast bars, installing neat aluminium or plastic cable grommets allows for tidy routing of power leads for countertop appliances and device charging stations without cluttering the food preparation surface.
