How to Fit Replacement Kitchen Drawers

Wobbly, sticking, or broken drawers are among the most common issues in older kitchens. Over years of daily use, timber grooves wear down, plastic wheels degrade, and drawer bottoms begin to sag under the weight of heavy cookware. Fortunately, you rarely need to replace entire base units to fix these problems. Installing replacement kitchen drawers allows you to keep your existing cabinet carcasses and drawer fronts while upgrading the internal hardware to smooth, modern standards.

Assessing Your Existing Cabinet Carcass

Before buying any new hardware, you must carefully evaluate the existing cabinet. While front fascias can often be reused or swapped, the internal dimensions of the cabinet dictate the size of drawer box and runner system you require.

Take the following measurements with a reliable tape measure:

  • Internal cabinet width: Measure the clear distance between the inside faces of the left and right side panels. Do not measure the external cabinet width, as panel thicknesses vary (commonly 15 mm, 18 mm, or 19 mm in UK kitchens).
  • Internal carcass depth: Measure from the front edge of the side panel to the back board. Modern metal drawer runners standardly require a few millimetres of clearance behind the runner mechanism.
  • Aperture height: Check the vertical clearance between shelf dividers or drawer cross-rails to ensure your new drawer sides will fit without catching.

Choosing the Right Replacement Drawer System

When planning a kitchen drawer replacement, you generally have two main approaches: traditional four-sided wooden boxes or modern metal drawer box systems.

Metal drawer systems (often featuring integrated steel sides that clip directly into undermount runners) are widely favoured for refurbishment projects. They provide exceptional load capacity, integrated height and side adjustments, and built-in soft-close mechanisms. Modern soft-close drawer runners ensure drawers glide quietly and shut smoothly under heavy loads without slamming.

Step-by-Step Installation Guide

Carrying out a complete replacement kitchen drawer project is straightforward if you follow a methodical approach.

1. Remove the Old Hardware

Take out the old drawer boxes and unscrew the existing runners from the cabinet sides. Fill any blown-out screw holes with wooden dowels or wood filler to create solid anchor points if your new runners align with old fixings.

2. Mark and Fit the New Drawer Runners

Accurate runner positioning is critical for smooth operation. Most modern runners use the standard 32 mm system hole spacing:

  • Draw a level horizontal line on both internal cabinet walls using a spirit level or set square.
  • Set the runner back from the front edge of the cabinet side panel by the recommended setback distance (typically around 2 mm to 4 mm for standard overlay fronts).
  • Fasten the runners securely using appropriate countersunk wood screws, ensuring both left and right sides are mounted at the exact same height and depth.

3. Assemble and Insert the Drawer Box

Assemble the new drawer base and back panel into the metal side profiles according to the manufacturer's layout. Once built, slide the drawer box onto the cabinet runners until you hear the locking clips engage. Test the sliding action to confirm there is no binding or uneven resistance.

4. Attach the Front Fascia

Modern metal drawer boxes use front fixing brackets that screw onto the back of your existing kitchen drawer front. Once attached, these brackets click directly into the drawer sides. Use the integrated cam adjustment screws on the sides of the drawer box to fine-tune the fascia position horizontally, vertically, and in tilt until the gaps around the unit are perfectly even.

Troubleshooting Common Fitting Issues

If your new drawer catches or fails to close completely, check the following points:

  • Cabinet out of square: Measure diagonals inside the carcass. If the unit is racked, shim the runners slightly to keep them parallel.
  • Uneven runner height: Even a 2 mm height discrepancy between the left and right runner will cause soft-close pistons to misalign.
  • Fascia catching on adjacent doors: Adjust the side cam fixings on the drawer sides to re-centre the front panel.
