Because most contemporary cabinetry is constructed from particle board, chipboard, or MDF, repeated opening, heavy doors, or accidental knocks can easily strip the screw fixings. When the internal core of the board crumbles, standard wood screws can no longer grip, leaving the hinge loose or detached entirely. Fortunately, you do not need to replace the entire carcase or door. Chipboard and MDF consist of compressed wood fibres and adhesive, capped with a thin laminate or melamine veneer. While excellent for flat-pack furniture, these materials have relatively low shear strength around small fixings. Over time, several factors cause hinge screws to tear free:

A hinge repair plate is a flat, pre-drilled metal bracket designed to bridge over the damaged section of the board. Instead of relying on two small screw holes located directly inside the blown-out zone, the plate spans a much wider surface area. It features multiple mounting perforations around its perimeter, allowing you to drive fresh fixings into solid, undamaged timber further away from the blowout. The standard concealed hinge arm or mounting plate is then bolted directly to threaded or pre-cut holes on the metal plate itself.

Completing a hinge plate repair takes roughly fifteen minutes per door and requires only basic hand tools.
1. Remove the Door and Assess the Damage
Unclip or unscrew the cabinet hinge from the mounting plate to remove the door safely. Unscrew the damaged mounting plate from the carcase (or the cup from the door, depending on where the failure occurred). Clear away any loose, crumbly debris from the damaged holes so the surface sits flush.
2. Position the Repair Plate
Align the bracket over the damaged area. If you are fixing the carcase side, align the standard 32 mm system holes on the repair bracket with the original mounting position. For door-side repairs, ensure the central aperture aligns precisely with the standard 35 mm hinge cup recess.
3. Secure the Bracket to the Cabinet
Hold the plate flat against the board. Using short, broad-thread wood screws, secure the plate through the outer perimeter holes into the sound chipboard. Ensure the screws are driven straight and hand-tightened to prevent stripping the fresh wood.
4. Reattach the Hinge
Fix your standard concealed hinge or mounting plate to the reinforced bracket using the machine screws or dedicated wood screws provided with the repair kit. Clip the door back into place and adjust the hinge alignment screws to level the door gap.
Tips for a Long-Lasting Repair
- Pre-drill pilot holes: When securing into undamaged MDF, a small 2 mm pilot hole prevents the dense outer face of the board from splitting.
- Check both sides: If the cabinet carcase is failing, inspect the hinge cup fixing on the door as well. Fitting plates to both sections ensures maximum stability.
- Avoid standard wood glue: Attempting to fill blown chipboard holes with standard PVA glue and matchsticks is rarely a permanent fix for heavy kitchen doors. Metal reinforcing plates distribute the physical load across a far wider footprint, preventing future failure.
