How to Fix Loose or Sagging Cabinet Door Hinges

A sagging or loose kitchen cabinet door is one of the most common issues in any home. Over time, constant opening and closing, combined with the weight of the door, causes screws to work themselves loose or pull out of the carcass entirely. Fortunately, fixing door hinges rarely requires replacing the whole unit. With a standard screwdriver and a few basic hardware techniques, you can restore your cupboard doors to perfect working order.

Identify the Cause of the Sag

Before jumping into repairs, examine the door closely to pinpoint the exact issue. Most cabinet problems stem from one of three common faults:

  • Misalignment: The hinge screws are securely fitted into the wood, but the internal adjustment screws have shifted.
  • Loose mounting screws: The screws holding the hinge to the door or the mounting plate to the carcass have backed out slightly.
  • Stripped screw holes: The screws spin freely because the chipboard or MDF core has crumbled around the threads.

Adjusting Concealed Cabinet Hinges

Standard European concealed hinges (often called cup hinges) feature built-in adjustment screws that control the position of the door in three dimensions:

  • Vertical adjustment: Loosen the top and bottom screws on the mounting plate fixed to the cabinet wall, shift the door up or down to level it, and re-tighten.
  • Depth adjustment: Turn the screw located towards the rear of the hinge arm to move the door closer to or further away from the carcass edge.
  • Lateral (side-to-side) adjustment: Turn the screw closest to the door cup to shift the door left or right, correcting any crooked gaps between adjoining units.

Making small, quarter-turn adjustments across all hinges on the door is usually enough to eliminate minor sagging.

Repairing Stripped Screw Holes in Chipboard

When screws spin loosely in the carcass, the timber fibres have failed. You cannot simply tighten them further; you must rebuild the fixing point using one of these reliable methods.

The Wooden Matchstick or Dowel Method

For lightly worn screw holes, a traditional joinery fix works wonders:

  1. Remove the door and unscrew the mounting plate from the carcass.
  2. Insert wooden matchsticks or a small hardwood dowel coated with PVA wood glue into the stripped hole.
  3. Allow the glue to cure fully, then trim any excess timber flush with the cabinet surface using a sharp chisel or utility knife.
  4. Drill a small pilot hole into the repair and drive the screw back in securely.

Using Hinge Repair Plates

If the chipboard around the hinge mounting holes has completely blown out, a stainless steel hinge repair plate is the most durable solution. These plates fit between the carcass and the hinge, distributing the load over a wider area by providing multiple fresh screw points around the damaged section.

Upgrading Screws and Hardware

Standard cabinet screws measure between 3.5 mm and 4 mm in diameter. If a hole is only slightly loose, replacing the original fastener with a dedicated 4 mm or 4.5 mm twinfast wood screw or an expanding Euro screw can provide immediate bite. However, ensure the replacement screw is not longer than the carcass thickness (typically 18 mm) to avoid piercing through the outer panel.
