How to Remove a Kitchen Drawer from Runners: A Step-by-Step Guide

Removing a drawer box from its cabinet is a routine task, whether you are deep cleaning, replacing damaged drawer runners, or adjusting cabinet hardware. However, modern cabinetry relies on various mechanical systems to ensure smooth operation, and forcing a drawer out incorrectly can buckle the steel slides or snap the internal catch mechanisms. Knowing how to pull out a kitchen drawer safely starts with identifying the specific type of runner fitted inside the unit.

Identifying Your Drawer Runner Mechanism

Before applying any force, inspect the sides and underside of the drawer box to determine the mechanism you are dealing with. Kitchen hardware generally falls into three main categories:

  • Side-Mounted Ball-Bearing Runners: Fixed to the external sides of the drawer box, these feature visible metal tracks with small steel ball bearings inside lubricated channels.
  • Undermount Concealed Runners: Tucked entirely beneath the drawer base, these hide the hardware from view and frequently feature integrated soft-close or push-to-open pistons.
  • Bottom-Mounted Roller Runners: Basic metal tracks with plastic wheels running along a groove, common in older or budget-friendly cabinetry.

How to Remove Side-Mounted Ball-Bearing Runners

Ball-bearing slides lock into place using plastic disconnect levers concealed within the metal track. To remove this style of drawer:

  1. Extend the drawer out as far as it will go until it reaches its hard stop.
  2. Examine the visible runner track on either side of the drawer box. Inside the channel, you will spot a slender plastic release trigger or lever.
  3. Engage the levers simultaneously. On standard hardware, one side typically pushes upwards while the opposite side presses downwards.
  4. Whilst holding both levers in their release positions, pull the drawer box straight forward out of the cabinet carcass.

Detaching Undermount and Soft-Close Drawers

Undermount systems provide a clean aesthetic by keeping the hardware invisible when the drawer is open. When figuring out how to pull out a kitchen drawer fitted with concealed soft-close runners, the release point is underneath the drawer base at the front edge.

  1. Pull the drawer fully outward to access the underside of the front corners.
  2. Feel or look underneath the front of the drawer box for plastic locking clips (often brightly coloured or textured for grip).
  3. Squeeze or slide the release catches inward towards the centre of the drawer. Some systems require you to push the levers upwards toward the drawer bottom.
  4. Lift the front of the drawer slightly off the runners to disengage the internal locking pins, then pull the entire unit forward and upward away from the rear hooks.

Removing Standard Roller Tracks

Roller runners do not use locking clips or disconnect levers. Instead, they operate on a simple drop-in channel design. To release them, fully open the drawer, tilt the front face upwards at roughly a 30 to 45-degree angle to lift the drawer wheel over the cabinet wheel stop, and slide the drawer completely free.

Troubleshooting Common Removal Problems

If the drawer resists detachment, check for these typical issues:

Problem Probable Cause Solution
Drawer sticks halfway Overloaded contents or misaligned track Empty contents to reduce weight; check for loose mounting screws.
Undermount won't lift Rear retaining hooks still engaged Ensure front clips are fully depressed before lifting front edge.
Lever won't move Excess side pressure on the slides Push drawer in 5 mm to relieve tension, then press the levers.
