How to Repair a Drawer: Step-by-Step Guide

A successful drawer repair in most cases requires the exact replacement of defective runners, taking into account the installation width, nominal length in millimetres, and load capacity.

When a drawer sticks, rubs, or tilts, the cause is rarely the piece of furniture itself, but rather worn-out fittings or a distorted construction. For the joiner or experienced fitter, restoration is a clearly defined process. Step 2: Determining the Correct Dimensions

Accurate measurement is crucial for proper operation. Three dimensions are essential:

  • Nominal length: Measure the depth of the drawer box (outer edge of the back panel to the inner edge of the front panel). The runner must not be longer than the box. Step 5: Installing the Carcase Runner

  1. Mark the correct height with a pencil and joiner's square.
  2. Position the carcase runner and align it horizontally using a short spirit level.
  3. Mark the drill holes. For side-mounted telescopic runners, always use the vertical and horizontal slotted holes for initial mounting. This allows for subsequent fine adjustment.
  4. Fasten the runner securely using pan-head screws (not countersunk, as these can distort the runner).

Step 6: Installing the Drawer Runner

Separate the inner member of the new telescopic slide (using the release lever).

  1. Place the member flat against the bottom edge of the drawer side panel.
  2. The front edge of the runner must align flush with the rear face of the drawer front (or be set back slightly according to manufacturer specifications, typically 2 mm).
  3. Screw the profile in place through the slotted holes. Ensure that screw heads sit completely flat so they do not rub against the ball cage later.

Step 7: Insertion and Fine Adjustment

Insert the drawer with its fitted inner runners horizontally into the carcase profiles. Push the drawer backwards with light, even pressure until the ball bearings audibly engage.
