How to Replace Furniture Drawers and Runners

Sticking, sagging, or completely broken drawers are among the most common issues in older kitchens, wardrobes, and office desks. Over time, timber grooves wear down, plastic wheels crack, and ball-bearing slides lose their smooth action. Fortunately, you do not need to replace the entire carcass. By fitting modern metal runners and custom boxes, completing a full drawer replacement can revitalise your furniture, restoring effortless glide and increasing weight capacity.

Assessing Your Existing Cabinetry

Before buying any hardware, examine the internal condition of your cabinet carcass. The side walls must be structurally sound and free from water damage or bowing so they can support new fixings. Identify the type of system you currently have:

  • Traditional timber runners: Hardwood runners fixed to the carcass sides that slot into grooves cut directly into the timber drawer box.
  • Bottom-mounted roller runners: Single-wheel nylon tracks fitted along the bottom edges of the opening.
  • Side-mounted ball-bearing slides: Telescopic metal runners screwed into the internal carcass sides and the drawer flank.
  • Concealed undermount runners: Premium slides fitted beneath the drawer base, hidden completely from view.

Accurate Measuring for Replacement Drawers

Proper sizing is the most critical step when planning drawer replacements. A discrepancy of just 1 to 2 mm can cause a slide to bind or fail to latch properly. Always take measurements using a reliable steel tape measure.

  1. Internal Carcass Width: Measure the exact distance between the inside faces of the cabinet walls. Check this dimension at the front, middle, and back of the cabinet to ensure the carcass is completely square.
  2. Internal Depth: Measure from the front edge of the cabinet carcass (excluding the door or drawer front) straight to the back panel. Runner lengths are standard and must be slightly shorter than this depth to allow full closure.
  3. Internal Height: Measure the vertical aperture to determine the maximum height of your new drawer box, ensuring clearance for the front panel overhang.

Use a spirit level and a set square to mark horizontal lines along both internal walls. Modern cabinet hardware typically follows the standard 32 mm system spacing, meaning pilot holes must align precisely on both sides to prevent racking.

3. Fix the Cabinet Runners

Separate the drawer-side member from the carcass-side runner if using ball-bearing slides. Align the carcass runner with your pencil datum line, setting it back roughly 2 mm from the front edge of the cabinet face. Secure the runner using suitable wood screws, placing fixings into both the elongated adjustment slots and the round locking holes.

4. Assemble and Mount the Drawer Box

Fit the drawer-side hardware to your replacement timber box or assemble your modern metal-sided drawer system according to its specific template. Offer the drawer into the cabinet, engaging the slides until you hear a clear click indicating the retention catches are locked.

Fine-Tuning and Adjustments

Once installed, test the motion across the full stroke. If the drawer rubs against one side, use the horizontal adjustment cams located on modern runners to shift the box left or right. For front alignment, use vertical adjustment screws to ensure consistent, even gaps around all cabinet fascias.
