How to Replace Kitchen Drawers and Runners

Sticky, sagging, or misaligned kitchen drawers can quickly make an otherwise functional kitchen feel tired and frustrating to use. Over time, internal ball bearings wear out, timber runners groove, and plastic brackets crack under daily load. Choosing to replace kitchen drawers or upgrade failing slide mechanisms is one of the most cost-effective ways to restore smooth, quiet operation without the expense of replacing entire cabinet carcasses.

Assessing Your Existing Drawers and Hardware

Before ordering new fittings, inspect the current setup to decide whether you only need to swap the runners or replace the entire drawer box assembly. Common signs of wear include metallic grinding noises, drawers dropping when extended, or fronts rubbing against adjacent cabinet doors.

  • Worn slide mechanisms: If the drawer box is solid timber or sturdy plywood, swapping old single-extension roller tracks for full-extension ball bearing runners will immediately upgrade usability.
  • Damaged drawer boxes: Blown chipboard bottoms or loose dowels often mean it is simpler to replace the complete drawer box with a modern metal drawer system.
  • Alignment issues: Check if the cabinet carcass is square. If the cabinet walls have bowed, you may need shims behind new runner tracks to maintain parallel lines.

Choosing the Right Type of Drawer Runners

Selecting appropriate hardware depends on the drawer construction, carcass depth, and expected weight capacity. Modern fittings generally fall into three categories:

  • Ball bearing runners: Side-mounted, heavy-duty slides that offer smooth travel and high load ratings. They require a standard clearance (typically 12.7 mm per side) between the drawer box and carcass wall.
  • Undermount concealed runners: Fitted beneath the drawer base, keeping metalwork hidden for a clean, bespoke look. These frequently include integrated soft-close dampening and tool-free front adjustment clips.
  • Metal drawer box systems: Modern modular units with integrated steel sides and built-in runner mechanisms, ideal for full replacements where existing timber boxes are beyond repair.

How to Measure for Replacement Runners

Accurate measurements prevent alignment headaches during installation. Always measure the internal cabinet space rather than relying purely on the old hardware dimensions.

  1. Internal Carcass Depth: Measure from the front edge of the cabinet side panel to the back board. Choose a runner length slightly shorter than this depth (usually leaving at least 10 mm clearance).
  2. Internal Width: Measure the clear distance between the left and right carcass panels at both the front and rear to verify the unit is square.
  3. Drawer Box Clearance: For standard side-mounted slides, subtract the required runner thickness (commonly 25 mm total for both sides) from the internal cabinet width to confirm drawer box compatibility.

Step-by-Step Replacement Guide

1. Removing the Old Drawer and Runners

Empty the drawer and pull it out fully. Release the safety clips or tilt the drawer upward to disengage it from the cabinet tracks. Unscrew the cabinet members from the carcass walls and remove the drawer members from the timber box. Clean away any sawdust or grease from the internal panels.

2. Installing the New Cabinet Runners

Mark horizontal reference lines inside the carcass using a spirit level or set square. Align the runner fixing holes with the standard 32 mm system holes if present, or mark pilot holes manually. Ensure both left and right runners are positioned at identical heights from the base panel. Fix the runners firmly with suitable wood screws.

3. Attaching the Drawer Members and Adjusting

Mount the corresponding drawer-side hardware flush with the bottom or sides of the drawer box according to the manufacturer's layout. Slide the drawer box into the cabinet until the mechanisms click into place. Test the movement and use the built-in adjustment screws to fine-tune horizontal gaps and vertical level until the drawer front aligns neatly with surrounding cabinetry.
