Over time, original drawer slides can bend, plastic wheels degrade, and overloaded bases begin to sag. Understanding Standard IKEA Drawer Mechanisms
Over the decades, flat-pack manufacturers have used several distinct runner formats across different furniture ranges:
- Bottom-mounted roller slides: Common in basic chests and older units, these rely on nylon wheels running along powder-coated steel tracks. They are prone to jumping off the rail when worn or overloaded.
- Side-mounted ball-bearing slides: Found on contemporary mid-range units, providing a smoother movement using steel ball bearings housed in grooved channels.
- Undermount concealed runners: Premium systems typically featuring integrated soft-close dampening and tool-free front clip releases.
When planning a repair or upgrade, knowing which system you currently have dictates whether you can drop in direct replacements or need to make minor adjustments to pilot holes.
Upgrading to Ball-Bearing and Soft-Close Runners
One of the most satisfying DIY improvements is replacing standard roller tracks with full-extension, ball-bearing slides or soft-close undermount runners. Upgrading brings distinct practical benefits:
- Full extension: Standard runners often leave the back quarter of the drawer hidden inside the carcass. Full-extension slides pull the entire box clear, giving complete visibility and access.
- Increased load capacity: Steel ball-bearing runners typically offer substantially higher weight ratings, preventing sagging under heavy clothing or kitchenware.
- Controlled, silent closing: Soft-close pistons catch the drawer in the final few centimetres of travel, eliminating slamming and reducing stress on timber joints.
Accurate Measuring for Hardware Compatibility
Before sourcing new components, precise measurements are critical to ensure that replacement hardware aligns with the existing drawer box and cabinet carcass:
- Internal Carcass Depth: Measure from the front edge of the cabinet side panel to the internal face of the back board. Runners must not exceed this depth.
- Side Clearance: Measure the gap between the external side of the drawer box and the internal side panel of the cabinet. Standard side-mounted ball-bearing runners typically require exactly 12.7 mm (1/2 inch) of clearance on each side.
- Runner Length: Remove an existing slide and measure the steel track length (excluding extension tabs). Common standard lengths range from 250 mm to 550 mm in 50 mm increments.
Fitting and Installing New Runners
Most modern cabinetry follows the 32 mm system—a standardised pattern of vertical holes spaced 32 mm apart. Many replacement runners share these fixing positions, allowing you to reuse existing pilot holes. If alignment differs slightly, place a spirit level along the cabinet wall, mark the new horizontal baseline, drill fresh 2 mm pilot holes, and secure the rails using standard countersunk wood screws (typically 3.5 mm or 4 mm gauge).
When working on the drawer box itself, ensure the slide is mounted perfectly parallel to the bottom edge. Misalignment of even a millimetre can cause the mechanism to bind or fail to latch into soft-close catches.
Strengthening Existing Drawer Boxes
When servicing slides, take the opportunity to reinforce the drawer structure. Thin hardboard bases often bow over time, pulling out of their side grooves. Applying a bead of wood adhesive along the underside groove and adding corner bracing brackets or centre-support steel tension straps will ensure the box remains rigid and square, preventing premature wear on your newly fitted runners.
