Before picking up any tools, check the exact specifications of the lock in hand. Three dimensions are absolutely critical for furniture fitting:

Step 1: Determine and Mark the Position

Determine the height of the lock based on ergonomics or visual preferences. Stick a strip of masking tape to the inside of the front at the desired height. This makes marking easier and protects the decorative finish.

Now measure the exact backset of the lock. If the backset is 25 mm, for example, use the try square to draw a vertical line exactly 25 mm from the edge of the door. Mark the desired height along this line. The intersection point is the exact centre for drilling the cylinder hole.

Step 2: Drill the Cylinder Hole

This step requires utmost care. A Forstner bit cuts through coated chipboard like a scalpel through fabric — precisely and without fraying edges, provided the technique is correct.

Place the centre point of the Forstner bit exactly on the marked cross. Drill from the inside of the door, holding the drill perfectly horizontal. To prevent blow-out or tear-out on the decorative face (the visible front), there are two proven methods:

  • Method A (Backing board): Clamp a flat piece of scrap wood firmly against the outer face of the door using a G-clamp. Then drill straight through the door front and into the scrap wood in one smooth pass.
  • Method B (Opposing drilling): Drill from the inside only until the fine centre point of the Forstner bit just breaks through and becomes visible as a tiny dot on the outside. Stop drilling immediately. Place the Forstner bit into this tiny hole from the outside face and drill the remaining material from the outside inwards. This guarantees crisp edges on both sides.

Step 3: Mount the Lock Casing

Push the cylinder lock through the newly drilled hole from the inside. Fit the rose (trim ring) onto the cylinder from the outside.

Align the lock casing on the inside so that it is perfectly parallel to the door edge using the try square. Mark the fixing screw positions with a bradawl or pencil. Remove the lock casing and pre-drill the holes lightly using a 2 mm wood bit (approx. 5 mm deep). This prevents the timber from splitting when driving in the wood screws.

Reinsert the lock and screw it in hand-tight. Take care not to overtighten the screws, as they can easily strip their threads in chipboard.

Step 4: Determine the Strike Plate Position

With the lock mounted to the door, the counterpart must now be fixed to the carcass. The strike plate (or striking angle bracket) receives the bolt and provides the actual locking hold.

To locate the exact position, professional fitters use a simple trick: Extend the lock bolt while the door is open. Apply a little chalk, lipstick, or a dab of dark grease to the end face of the bolt. Close the door fully. Now turn the key so the bolt presses against the inside of the carcass (or the shelf).

When you turn the key back and open the door, an exact imprint of the bolt will be visible on the carcass. The opening of the strike plate must be aligned exactly over this mark.

Step 5: Mount the Strike Plate and Test Function

Hold the strike plate against the marked position. Mark the screw holes and pre-drill them using a fine wood bit. Secure the strike plate with screws.

Close the door and test the mechanism. The key should turn smoothly by 90° or 180° (depending on the model) without noticeable resistance. If the bolt jams, the strike plate is sitting either too high, too low, or too close to the front edge. In this case, loosen the strike plate screws slightly and adjust the position by a few millimetres. Many strike plates feature slotted holes designed specifically for this fine adjustment.

  • Wrong drill bit selection: Using a standard twist drill bit instead of a Forstner bit for a 19 mm hole inevitably leads to massive tear-out on the face surface.
  • Ignoring door clearances and buffers: If the door features soft-close dampeners, it requires slight pressure against the dampeners when fully closed. If the strike plate is fitted too tightly, the lock can only be turned with excessive force. Allow approximately 1 mm to 1.5 mm of clearance for the bolt.

The cylinder is inserted through a punched hole in the sheet metal (often featuring flat sides to prevent rotation) and secured from behind with a large retaining nut (usually 22 mm or 24 mm spanner size) or a spring clip.
