How to Install a Desk Cable Grommet (60mm & 80mm)

Installing a cable grommet requires an accurate hole cut with a hole saw to fit the hardware flush into the desktop and neatly route cables through the work surface.

A tidy workstation requires well-thought-out cable management. Whether for a classic office desk or a height-adjustable desk, retrofitting a cable grommet is a standard procedure in furniture making. This process demands precise positioning and the correct tools to avoid damaging the surface coating of the desktop.

The most common installation diameters for round grommets are 60 mm and 80 mm.

Step 1: Check the Substructure and Determine the Position

Before measuring, check the underside of the desktop. Pay attention to the position of the steel frame (crossbar), desk legs, or desk frame. Drilling directly over a steel support makes installation impossible. Choose a position that allows cables to run directly to the cable tray or power socket later. A proven distance from the centre of the hole to the rear edge of the desk is between 70 mm and 100 mm.

Step 2: Mark and Protect the Surface

Mark the exact centre point of the planned hole with a pencil. Then, stick two strips of masking tape in a cross directly over this mark and redraw the point onto the tape. The masking tape acts as a mechanical protective layer for the melamine coating or wood veneer, minimising the risk of rotating saw teeth tearing the edges of the top layer.

Step 3: Starting the Hole

Insert the hole saw into the drill chuck. Position the tip of the pilot drill bit precisely on the mark. Hold the drill completely perpendicular to the desktop. Drill at a moderate speed with light pressure. As soon as the pilot drill bit penetrates the material and the teeth of the hole saw touch the wood, hold the machine firmly and continue drilling evenly.

Step 4: The Counter-Cut (Pro Tip for Clean Edges)

Do not drill completely through the desktop in one go. As soon as the tip of the pilot drill bit noticeably or visibly emerges on the underside of the desktop, stop. Pull the saw out of the hole, move to the underside of the desk, and insert the pilot drill bit into the small exit hole. Now drill from below upwards until the core comes free. This technique prevents large-scale breakout of the chipboard at the exit point.

Step 5: Smooth the Edges and Insert the Fitting

Carefully remove the masking tape. Lightly sand the inner edge of the hole with sandpaper to remove loose wood fibres. Now take your 60mm desk cable grommet or 80mm desk cable grommet and press the lower collar (the body) into the hole. The fitting should sit firmly. The top cover (the cap with the cable opening) is then placed on top and locked into place with a slight turn.

  • Choosing the wrong drill size: The specified diameter (e.g. 60 mm) always refers to the cut-out size (drill hole), not the outer diameter of the top flange. The flange is always a few millimetres larger to conceal the cut edge. Therefore, use a 60 mm or 80 mm hole saw exactly.
  • Drilling at an angle: If the tool is not held at a 90° angle, the saw will bind, the hole will become oval, and the fitting cannot be pushed in flush.
  • Applying too much pressure: Forcing the saw through the material risks burning the wood through frictional heat and causing tear-out on the lower surface layer.

Should I choose a 60 mm or 80 mm grommet? This depends on the plugs that need to pass through. For standard USB, network, or HDMI cables, a 60 mm grommet is completely sufficient. However, if larger mains plugs (such as standard kettle leads or monitor power cables) need to fit through, the 80 mm size is essential, as a standard plug often measures nearly 40 mm to 45 mm diagonally and extra room is required when running multiple cables.

How close to the edge of the desk can I drill? Leave at least 30 mm to 50 mm of material between the outer edge of the drilled hole and the edge of the desk. For an 80mm desk cable grommet, the centre of the hole should therefore be at least 70 mm to 90 mm from the edge. Otherwise, the desktop loses its structural integrity at that point.

How do I install square cable grommets? For a square cable grommet or rectangular aluminium cable flaps, a round hole saw is not sufficient.
