Step-by-Step Installation Guide (Surface-Mounted Version)
The most frequently used variant is mounting via a linear or cruciform adapter plate inside the carcase. The mechanism works like a vehicle chassis: the firmly screwed base plate provides rigid stability, while the spring-loaded cylinder performs the dynamic impact work.
Step 1: Determine the Position
The push catch is mounted inside the carcase on the handle side (opposite the hinge side). For standard doors, mounting at the height of the pressure point is recommended – that is, where the user will later press against the door. The depth of positioning is crucial. The front edge of the mechanism (in the retracted state) must sit flush with the carcase front edge, plus the thickness of the counter plate and the required release gap.
Step 2: Screw on the Adapter Plate
Use the try square to align the adapter plate at an exact 90-degree angle to the carcase front edge.
- Mark the drill holes with the bradawl.
- Pre-drill with the 2 mm wood drill bit to a maximum depth of 10 mm to prevent the chipboard from splitting.
- Fix the plate with chipboard screws (e.g. 3.5 x 15 mm). On plates with slotted holes, initially tighten the screws only lightly to allow for depth adjustment later.
Step 3: Insert the Ejector Cylinder
The cylindrical push catch is now clipped or slid into the adapter plate until it audibly clicks into place. Test the mechanism by manually pressing the pin in.
Step 4: Mount the Counter Plate on the Front
If the push catch features a magnetic tip, a metal counter plate must be attached to the inside of the furniture front.
- Mark the ejector pin of the catch lightly with a soft pencil.
- Close the door and press firmly so that the dot transfers to the inside of the door.
- At this mark, press in the flat counter plate (often equipped with a small spur) or fix it with an extremely short screw (e.g. 3 x 13 mm). With MDF fronts, take care not to drill right through.
Step 5: Adjust the Release Gap
For the mechanism to trigger, the door must still be able to be pushed inwards by 1.5 mm to 2.5 mm when closed. This release gap is precisely adjusted by turning the ejector pin (threaded). Turning clockwise shortens the pin, whilst turning anti-clockwise extends it.
Alternative: Flush Inset Installation
For a visually concealed solution, the cylinder can be drilled directly into the end face of the carcase side panel.
- Prerequisite: The carcase side must be at least 16 mm, preferably 18 mm thick.
- Drilling: An accurate hole (usually Ø 10 mm, depth approx. 50 mm to 70 mm) is drilled into the front edge. A drill guide or pillar drill is essential for this, as a wandering drill bit will ruin the carcase wall.
- The cylinder is subsequently inserted flush into the hole.
Excursus: Push-to-Open for Drawers
Whilst single-point push catches are used for hinged doors, drawers require a different mechanism. Here, the function is integrated directly into the runner. When fitting push to open drawer runners, installing separate catches is not required. A full-extension runner with this function releases the drawer over its entire length of typically 250 mm - 700 mm as soon as pressure is applied to the front panel.
Common Installation Errors
- No release gap present: If the door sits tight against the carcase, the pin cannot be pressed in far enough to release the catch. The door jams. Remedy: shorten the pin by screwing it inwards, or set the base plate slightly further back.
- Incorrect hinge choice: If standard hinges with an automatic closing mechanism are used (e.g. common 110-degree concealed hinges / cabinet hinges with springs), the ejector pushes the door open, but the hinge spring immediately pulls it shut again. The door remains open by only a tiny gap.
- Unfavourable positioning on tall doors: With very tall cabinet doors (such as wardrobes) and a central catch position, the door can warp when the user pushes at the very top or bottom. The catch must sit exactly at the height of the primary pressure point.

How large must the gap between the door and carcase be? For the push mechanism to function correctly, a front gap of 1.5 mm to 3.0 mm is strictly required. This release gap allows the travel needed to push the door inward to unlock the catch.
Can I use push catches and door dampers simultaneously? No. Furniture door dampers (soft-close) slow down door closure and pull it gently shut. However, a push catch requires a firm stop to trigger and lock the spring mechanism. The two systems interfere with each other.
When should I choose a magnet and when a rubber buffer? A push catch with a magnetic tip is used with un-damped hinges without springs (free-swinging hinges).
