1. Planning Position and Cable Routing
The first step is determining where the LED strip will run. For optimal illumination of clothing, the profile is usually mounted vertically on the inner side walls or horizontally directly behind the front top panel.
If the profile is mounted horizontally, it should be positioned approximately 30 mm - 50 mm behind the door edge. With vertical mounting, ensure that hinges or pull-outs are not obstructed. Mark the positions for cable routing. Cables should always run invisibly behind the wardrobe back panel (usually a 3 mm thick HDF board) to the transformer. Drill 8 mm diameter holes through the back panel or top panel at the marked points.
2. Cutting and Mounting Aluminium Profiles
An LED strip should never be adhered directly onto wood. The aluminium profile is essential as a heat sink. Without this thermal dissipation, the diodes age extremely rapidly and lose brightness.
Measure the required length inside the cabinet accurately. Deduct about 10 mm - 15 mm from this measurement to leave space for end caps and cable entry. Cut the profile to size using a fine-toothed hacksaw. Carefully deburr the cut edges using a file to prevent damaging the cable insulation later.
Pre-drill the aluminium profile at intervals of approx. 400 mm using a 3 mm metal drill bit. Countersink the drill holes so the screw heads sit flush and do not mechanically damage the light strip. Now connect the supply cables to the strip. Although clip connectors exist, a soldered joint is far less prone to loose connections over time. Strip approx. 3 mm of insulation from the 2-core cable and tin the wire ends. Apply a small amount of solder to the copper pads on the LED strip. Solder the red wire to the positive terminal (+) and the black wire to the negative terminal (-). Clean the inside of the mounted aluminium profile with isopropanol to remove dust and grease. Peel off the backing film from the double-sided 3M adhesive tape on the back of the circuit board bit by bit.
Press the strip centrally into the profile. Apply light pressure only between the LEDs — never press directly onto the yellow diodes, as they are mechanically sensitive. Feed the soldered cable through the pre-drilled hole in the wardrobe back panel. Finally, clip the plastic cover (diffuser) into the profile from the front. It protects the components from dust and provides homogeneous, glare-free light.
5. Wiring and Connecting the Transformer
All cables running behind the wardrobe back panel must now be connected to the transformer. If you are fitting multiple strips in a large wardrobe, wire them in parallel, not in series. A series connection over several metres leads to a voltage drop, causing the strip to appear noticeably dimmer towards the end.
Next, integrate the control hardware. In cabinet making, an infrared sensor acting as a door contact switch is commonly used. This is wired between the transformer (secondary side, 12 V / 24 V) and the LED strip. When the wardrobe door opens, the sensor closes the circuit. - Omitting aluminium profiles: Sticking a self-adhesive strip directly onto melamine-faced chipboard is a beginner's mistake. Trapped heat quickly degrades the adhesive, and the lifespan of the LEDs decreases drastically.
- Cable cross-section too small: With longer supply runs (over 2000 mm) at 12 V, thin cables cause voltage drops. Use at least 0.75 mm², and for long distances use 1.5 mm² stranded cable.
- Bending at 90 degrees: The conductive traces on the strip break easily. If you need to route the strip around a corner (e.g. at a 90° angle), do not fold it flat. Use corner connectors or solder two short, flexible wire pieces between the cut strip segments.

Can I connect a 12 V strip light to a 24 V power supply? No. The operating voltage must match. A 12 V strip connected to a 24 V transformer will burn out in fractions of a second. Conversely, a 24 V strip connected to a 12 V power supply will not light up at all, or only extremely dimly.
How do I clean wardrobe lighting? Because the strip is protected by the diffuser, it is sufficient to wipe the plastic cover with a damp microfibre cloth during routine wardrobe cleaning. Harsh cleaning chemicals should be avoided as they can cloud the plastic.
Why does the strip light flicker after switching on? Flickering usually indicates an overloaded transformer. The power supply unit cuts out due to overload protection and immediately switches back on. Check whether the total wattage of the strip exceeds the maximum rating of the power supply.
